I didn't use to care. Lando Calrissian was cool because he was suave and because he decided to be a hero at the expense even of his own safety, not because he was black. Magua from The Last of the Mohicans had his family slaughtered by white men...but he was also a monster who was brutal, cruel, and straight up villainous. In the series Wild C.A.T.S one of the heroes is a short white business man who often uses his wealth for the cause of humanity, and even risks his safety to help his friends. That's unthinkable nowadays for no reason at all.
Bill Sikes is a poor man...but he's also a drunkard, a murderer, and a fiend. Again, this would be impossible because his economic status instantly is supposed to make his situation ambiguous.

There's an upcoming Treasure Island movie with David Oyelowo as Long John Silver.

I have a feeling that Long John will NOT be like the book and be very sympathetic and all his actions will be justified. Why? Because it's 2026 and he's played by a black man. No one on earth has the courage or integrity to either READ the book and adapt it or portray and non-white actor as truly evil. At most he'll be a tragic villain, pressured to a life of villainy by the evil forces of society.
And, if they feel really spicy, he'll be a former slave because why the hell not.
