It wasn't all that long ago that anyone who identified as the opposite sex would be involuntarily committed to an insane asylum. Does anyone at this point seriously think that our current approach is an improvement?

Really? Because transgendered people go back 6500 years. When, exactly, do you imagine this was a matter for asylums?
Dr. Benjamin was a pioneer in treating transgendered people in the 40s. I don’t recall any of his patients being committed. My favorite musician became one of his patients in the 60s, after he LITERALLY wrote the book on the current method of treatment.

First of all, I don’t think the comparison is valid since it really didn’t happen.
The current form of treatment has a regret rate less than 1%. IIRC that’s better than getting a tattoo.
So, yeah, Much better, and it’s only been common practice in the US for 85 years or so.

Here’s a concept that’ll drive you insane, OP:

Hermaphrodites.

At one time, not wanting to be considered living farm equipment was considered a mental illness, fuckwad. We - or rather, those of us with functional moral compasses - grew up and realized what was really going on.

I look forward to the day when advocating transphobia draws the attention of mental health professionals. Not to involuntarily commit bigots, but to urge them into therapy.

To be frank, I do miss the times when we put nazis and their supporters on trial. Nostalgia is in the air, I suppose.
