In saner times, if a man organized and pulled off a mission to rescue stranded astronauts from space, he would be hailed as a hero. Instead Elon is vilified. The Left would have loved if the rescue ship exploded and killed everyone on board. We all know they were rooting for it.

I highly doubt that Elon Musk had any actual involvement. And if he was, than very likely to the detriment of the operation.

No, that’s what Elon Musk did back in the day to Vern Unsworth after trying to shoehorn himself into the Thailand cave rescue and proved worse than useless.
A man who saves people only cynically to gain fame and advertising and reacts to “rivals” to this glory with intense jealousy and spite is no hero. He is a villain seeking good publicity. Elon Musk has proven himself to be exactly that - nothing happening in the years since having hinted even one bit at any improvement, quite the contrary in fact! -, and really, it is a moral obligation to deny him this good publicity, his leeching of credit.
The Left would have loved if the rescue ship exploded and killed everyone on board. We all know they were rooting for it.
And by “know”, you mean “project our own spitefulness”…
Whilst somewhat dramatised in that directed by Ron Howard, Apollo 13.
Frankly, Elongated Muskrat can’t handle Reality so he would have been fucked if that happened today.
It was ingenuity of NASA scientists & engineers - as well as the bravery of those three astronauts - which ensured messrs. Lovell, Swigert & Haise returned to Earth safely.
Muskrat would have simply enjoyed the extremely expensive fireworks display.
He certainly did very recently, OP.
Ex Luna, Scientia. Ex Adversis, Triumphus.
Ex Musk, Stultitia.
…he’s also a tithead.

You mean back when the UN came up with a plan to END WORLD HUNGER for six billion dollars, and someone who HAD $6b jumped up and DID IT? Back then?
Yeah. He could ahve been hailed as a hero. He chose to go to Mars instead.
Confused?
