Mansplaining is a sexist expression used instead of saying patronising or any other valid description, used to associate all men by implication with negative behaviour that can equally apply to either sex.

If you don’t think it’s a big deal just think of how many words gain a negative connotation when you add ‘man’ in front of them.

Explain - Mansplain

Handle - Manhandle

Spread - Manspread

This wouldn’t be acceptable with any other characteristic. But our society finds it acceptable to demonise men in general. It would be nice if at least most men woke up and objected to this underlying animosity that’s permitted.

Certainly in the case of the latter, anyone - regardless of gender - would explain to you that they enter/exit such via the opening of a Sewage Tunnel Lid.

*- Not so long ago, I went to Scarborough. When the train pulled into Paragon Interchange's Platform 4 (the usual one for that service), the driver got out of that, and his job - as he was going off shift - was replaced by another Train Driver.

I only disagree with the guy´s underlying sentiment, it is kinda weird.

A description of sexism is not the promotion of sexism. Just like awareness of racism is not racism, even though it's also commonly twisted as such to maintain bigotry.

So you’re offended. Wait, I thought we weren’t supposed to get offended. Now I’m confused.

Manchild – because women are supposed to grow up fast and take on the responsibilities of not only caring for themselves but also their partners and any children involved.

Manflu - because historically, women didn’t get a day off from household responsibilities or motherhood when they were mildly sick, or even VERY sick. We worked until our bodies gave out and we fainted or died.

Manspreading – because women are told to make ourselves small and take up as little space as possible to be modest and feminine.

Mansplaining – because a woman’s credentials and lived experience doesn’t matter as much as a man’s opinion.

Manhandling – this isn’t really a neologism, it’s from the 1830s and originally literally meant ‘to move via the strength of men’. The association with roughness though… that’s because women are either too weak to move a thing, or too ‘gentle’ to cause damage while doing so.

All of these are rooted in the fact that women have high standards to live up to and men DON’T. Therein you will find the issue. Women will stop creating derogatory terms about men when men stop being inconsiderate assholes who both devalue women’s accomplishments and achievements yet need us to do the slightest things for them anyway.

The problem is that the word "patronising" is pretty sexist to begin with.

Patronize comes from Latin patronus "protector, master," related to pater "father." So if you patronize a person, you talk down to them like a father might do to his child or a master to his apprentice.

A bit late of a reply, but yes I totally agree with you. The patriarchy hurts everyone. Men being ridiculed for emotional availability or interests in “women’s work” is just another symptom of the problem.
