Americans who don't live in metro areas do a lot of driving because there's not much available in walking distance, like friends, stores, etc. (That's also why rural Americans tend to be obese.) Having a car is thus an American symbol of freedom and self-sufficiency. Losing your car means that you're trapped, so once you enter a 15-minute city, you can never leave.
