Maybe you've never really known her.

That could be one of the root causes of parental transphobia: the sense that the parent's idea of their child's identity was wrong from the start. So either the parent failed to recognize their child's true gender, or they failed to prevent their child from becoming trans.

Either way, the parent sees themselves as a failure, and that's a mighty bitter pill to swallow. Much easier on the ego to reject the trans stranger their child has become.
