For those who don’t know, some context of these conspiracy theories.
RWBY was a collaborative effort of animator Monty Oum and his two friends, Miles and Kerry; while Monty was the one who came up with the concept, it was Miles and Kerry in charge of writing the actual story - in fact they spent quite a bit of time working on the story and characters together. Monty was mostly regarded as the “idea guy” but his notoriety as a brilliant animator got him put on an absurdly high pedestal by weebs.
Monty, Miles and Kerry has a basic structure for what they had in mind for the series to go, but didn’t have a complete picture. Monty openly spoke out against those who slander his friends. Monty unfortunately passed away in 2016 during the production of RWBY’s third season, leaving Miles and Kerry to pick up the pieces for him.
During this time, an animator named Shane Newville was taking under Monty’s wing. Shane was one of many weebs who put Monty on a high pedestal, that after he passed, he became difficult to work with, and his mental health took a turn for the worse. Shane thought of himself as more important than he actually was, and insisted on running the show himself. There’s also reason to believe that Shane was being sweet on Monty’s wife while he was in hospital, prompting Shane’s own wife to leave him. Shane was of course fired, and tried to bring down Rooster Teeth by writing a long “Woe is Me” sob story to try to throw Rooster Teeth under the bus.
This letter proved to be the source of many conspiracy theorists in the fandom, and by and large the reason fans use Monty’s name to attack the show and it’s writers. It is especially used to by weebs, right wing “fans” and homophobes who watch the series, who make appeals to “Monty’s Vison” to attack his friends…and family.
Monty’s brother Neath stepped in to voice a character that Monty himself voiced until his death. Contrary to what was said in the comment, Neath Oum still works for the company to this day, and is openly supportive of the show. In recent months, Neath spoke out against critics of the show using his deceased brothers name as an excuse to attack the show…which prompted said critics to double down and attack Neath on social media, declaring him a “traitor” to his brother. This incident happened last fall by the way.
A favorite talking point of these critics - especially homophobes - is that Monty didn’t intend for gay couples within the shows main cast, citing an out of context qoute of Monty’s that the titular team is “like a sisterhood at this point” during a commentary of season two, in which he also said he was interested in exploring where their relationships would go from there. After the blatant coupling of character’s Blake and Yang, homophobic “fans” use that out of context qoute to claim that they were *always* supposed to be a sisterhood and that Monty never intended LGBT representation from them.
This is of course blatantly false, and Monty has been shown being supportive of fans, and LGBT interpretations of his characters, spoke out against those who attack his friends, and openly talked about the idea of eventual LGBT representation from the protagonists - in fact, Blake and Yang hooking up was teased by their actresses in the early seasons before Monty’s passing.
In short, RWBY is infamously attacked by conspiracy theorists in the weeb community, who like to pretend that Monty was this poor little artist who was betrayed by his friends and family - while selectively ignoring what the man himself was like, and what he actually said.
