Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) said on Wednesday night that anyone who does not believe that Jesus died for their salvation is unfit to serve in the Senate and “should be nowhere near Washington.” Moreno spoke at a rally in Chillicothe, Ohio, where he was joined by President Donald Trump and Sen. Jon Husted, who is in a close race against former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.
“This character, Abdul El-Sayed, can be nowhere near Washington, D.C.,” he continued before saying non-Christians have no business in the Senate. “Do you think he understands that concept? That our rights come from God Almighty? That Jesus came here for our salvation. He should be nowhere near Washington, D.C. And Mike Rogers is gonna kick his ass on Tuesday.”

The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion
-George Washington
Now point out in the US Constitution - that which which he and the other Founding Fathers created, and became the very basis of the country you have today - where it says verbatim the words ‘God’, ‘Jesus’ and ‘Creator’.
We’ll wait, Bernie Moron o.
So much for Republicans being American patriots: they want to gut the Constitution and impose a theocracy.
I keep thinking of my father's parents, rock-ribbed Republicans both, and how disappointed they would be.
Nah, it’s you, Bernie Moreno, who doesn’t belong anywhere near DC, nor any state capitol, or really any political center anywhere. You shouldn’t be able to run for dog catcher.

Unfortunately, that’s what their churches/pastors have told them patriotism is.
And yeah, my grandmother was a Republican. She liked the Republican Party because Lincoln was her favorite president. She was horrified by what George W. Bush did so she voted for Obama, and she was really excited to vote for the first Black president. She passed away in November 2008 so even though she didn’t get to see him as president, she did get to see him get elected.
She would be so disappointed now. When she became Republican it was because they were the ones who were for equality - racial, gender, religious, etc. She would not recognize what the party she was once proud to be a member of has become.

The Evangelical domination of the GOP is to blame. I found an interesting essay from David A. Hollinger, "The Evangelical Capture of the Republican Party and Its Implications for Academia" at https://publicseminar.org/2025/08/the-anti-intellectual-republican-party/
For the first time in American history, a major political party has a vested interest in a low-education electorate. This astonishing fact has inspired remarkably little discussion. Religion has a lot do with it. The Republican Party courted evangelical Protestants for decades, but the client eventually captured the patron.
The marriage of religion and politics is always a disaster. Religion becomes tainted because politics is inevitably dirty, and politics becomes rigid and unable to compromise.
Moreno is either uneducated or willfully ignorant, possibly a little bit of both. Muslims actually do consider Jesus a prophet, and I would suspect a lot of them would agree with the statement that “our rights come from God.” They’d probably say “Allah” and not “God” but that’s just two words for the same thing, really. ‘
This might sound stupid or a bit silly, but I think it’s like Christianity is a super-popular video game, and then Muslims were the people that made a big mod to it, that was popular too, but a lot of people that were fans of the original game don’t like it. But most people don’t realize, it’s still kinda the same game. And for that matter, Christianity itself is a “mod” of Judaism. Jesus and Mohammed are optional DLC packs, lol.
Actually, anyone who puts a theocratic condition for a government post is violating the Constitution and has no business in government, calumniator. A doctrine of "rights come from God" sounds like an excuse to suppress rights or impose abuse on dubious theocratic grounds. A subjective "sin" may or may not be a crime and there is no valid reason for the concept of "sin" to become a legal matter. I can argue that you're being sinful by promoting your lies. I can also argue that you're an agent of government corruption: you're using it as a platform to rot it from inside, working against its basic Constitutional principles.
Confused?
