Police in south India have arrested a couple after the woman allegedly threw their deaf and nonverbal 6-year-old son into a crocodile infested canal, leading to the child's death.

The incident happened in the Dandeli rural area of Karnataka state on Saturday, according to police, who told CBS News that Savitri, 26, who uses only one name, threw her son into a local canal after an argument with her husband.

"We found the child's body from the canal on Sunday morning," Karnataka Police sub-inspector Krishna Arakeri, who is investigating the case, told CBS News. "There were several injury marks on the child's body and one hand was missing, which seems to have been eaten by a crocodile."

During preliminary questioning, Savitri told police that her husband, Ravi Kumar, 27, would often blame her for their son's disabilities and urge her to throw him into the river, Arakeri said.

This poor kid. How fucking awful. I hate his parents with the power of 10,000 suns. I wish I could throw them in fucking crocodile pit.

Almost every day I am reminded how incredibly lucky I was to have the parents I did.

Alright, I am pretty sure I am going to catch some heat for this, but while the act itself is barbaric, the parents’ decision might have been inspired by desperation rather than simple hatred of disabled people.
It is India. Their support networks are loose, to put it mildly. Odds are, they just did not have the resources to ensure their child's future, and possibly even their own in their present state.
So, while the act itself is abhorrent, we might have to also consider the fact that these parents, in another country with better infrastructure and welfare systems, might well have preferred another outcome.
Westerners tend to forget that welfare and support systems are still very much an advantage exclusive to their countries. I know of families in Africa which actually had to endanger their livelihood to get a child treated of a debilitating but still relatively benign abnormality. For those parents in India, the issue might well have been even more of an impossible conundrum.
My conclusion was that the act was rash and cruel, but that the moral component of the crime might not be as clear-cut as we are first inclined to think.

I think I get what you’re trying to say, but even if the parents simply couldn’t take care of their disabled child no matter what (and there are no support networks whatsoever either), there are still FAR more humane options than literally throwing the child to the crocodiles.

Hell, even if killing the child was literally the ONLY option, there are still far less painful and horrifying ways to do so. This reeks of sheer sadism and hatred to me.

I’m not an expert on India, but from what I do know it’s pretty damn difficult to change things in there.

Not saying I don’t agree with you, but sometimes the flaw is so deep in the system that it’s almost impossible to get out.

So I’m thinking it was less desperation and more anger and possible shame, just because of this line:

The fact that there is blaming going on and dude is claiming that the kid’s disabilities were someone’s “fault” really tells me that they were angry and possibly ashamed of the kid.
