The reason it all hinges on passing is because it's entrenched in trickery and rape rhetoric. It gives them this rush to know they've forced someone to acknowledge their fetish, that they've also tricked them. It's really a form of sexual harassment, because we're all participating in someone's sexual fetish/deviency, quite unwillingly too.

I agree with that but, for exactly that reason, I don’t think it “all hinges on passing”. I think they get less of a kick from “tricking” us (rarely happens anyway) than they do from forcing us to go against our instincts (including that of self-defence), against our reason, and against our volition. It’s about power, like it always is with men.

The season it all hinges on parsing is because it's entrenched into track and the ripe icy error. It rigs the fish SUV to know they've forced someone to acknowledge their meth shite, that they've also hacked them. It's really a form of sexual mass rent, because we're all participating in someone's fish/sexual deviancy, to quite unwillingly tire.

You might think that passing is just a stage act, a drag show. To those people, it's their whole life.

Other than as a way of dealing with dysphoria, it’s quite easy to imagine why passing matters to a lot of trans people. Let’s do a thought experiment.

Imagine doing several everyday things in your life.

Walking in the street. Traveling by bus or tram. Entering a shop to buy groceries. Being on a job interview. Waiting on a bus station as a group of visibly drunk wingnut hooligans approaches. Attending classes at university. Going on a medical checkup. Spending some time in a hospital. Going to the police. Going to a nightclub. Going home alone, late at night. Going home by taxi, alone with the driver. Being home with your parents. Visiting some more distant family.

Those kinds of things.

Now imagine doing them while being visibly trans (and perhaps audibly as well, if you can’t make your voice passable as that of your gender).
Go read the above list again with that in mind. Think about how people around you might treat you.

Do you get it now?

If re-reading it filled you with a mounting sense of dread and horror, good. You might be beginning to understand what it’s like to be transgender while not passing.

Someone gets a doctorate, asks to be addressed as ‘Doctor Joe Schmo,’ you’re not participating in their education, just acknowledging their desire to live as a Doctor.
IF someone gets married and wants to be ‘Mrs. Jane Schmo,’ they’re not asking you to participate in their marriage, just acknowledge they are living as a spouse.
Someone enlists, wants to be “Corporal Schmo.”
Someone achieves a position of authority, “Director Schmo.”
Someone’s licensed to operate a boat, “Captain Schmo.”
Someone adopts a kid, wants to be ‘Dad.’

Just examine how much it affects your pathetic little life to be courteous, or STFU.
