[ on indigenous people in canada]
They were literally stone age barbarians. The only metal they saw was the Inuit finding meteoroids on the tundra.
Scalping and raiding other tribes and making snowshoes are all they really accomplished in 16,000 years.
I've known this since I was a kid. You can blame the CBC for young me learning those "hate facts"

It wasn't your land you fucking moron. It doesn't matter what period they were living in compared to Europe; that land belonged to them.
I am tired of hearing these stupid justifications for imperial conquest and colonial thinking. They could have been Stone age people it doesn't fucking matter. Our ancestors, with their so-called Superior European sensibilities, took their property. They saw nothing wrong with crimes committed against people less advanced than themselves. That includes genocide, theft, and eventually, taking their children from them.
colonial thinking
AKA might makes right?
Yeah, I watched those CBC shorts too, as a kid. Funny thing, though, your “Stone Age barbarians” had trade economies, something approaching diplomatic confederations, and even non-lethal wars (“counting coup” was a thing, after all.)
But none of that lets you strut around swinging your Big White Dick like you're King Shit of Fuck Mountain, so I guess we'll just ignore it, right?
No matter how many times I read this shit - and fucking hell I have seen a LOT of it in the last month, assholes stopping in on entirely unrelated news stories to shit talk First Nations in the comments sections and spitting on corpses with glee - it never fails to make me so mad I feel physically sick.
I can’t have been learning from different books so what the hell is the explanation for why the half a clue I have about our sordid history is three more clues than most? Is all the casual conversation I missed out on as a child being a social outcast just 90% racist anecdotes that supplant every fact in our heads? I can not for the life of me make sense of why any of this sounds like sense to so many people.
And for that obsession with scalping it’s demented we called taking a piece of scalp as a war trophy a “savage” practice even though collecting ears, teeth, and entire heads among other acts of corpse desecration was the norm for “civilized” armies not just of the day but well into the 20th century. Even today, by some accounts. And outside of war and capital punishment we were handing out strips of torn off flesh from people who were publicly tortured to death for the crime of “seeking to outrage” a white person as souvenirs to children. We’re reluctant to call all that savage even in hindsight.
Maybe my hypocrite gene is defective or something.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
