Yup, I had the same experience in Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, and even Arkansas (though it was frowned on there).
It’s also incredibly common in metropolitan areas; it’s almost like the majority of people care more about social compatibility than skin colour! Crazy, right?

Also: I was an average-looking AMAB, but lost a tooth in a car accident AND I'm genderqueer. I've always been fairly poor (even homeless a couple of times), but have had quite a few sexual partners (including long-term relationships) over the years. Some were with women much, much more attractive than me, but they loved me nonetheless. Because I actually have compassion,and sincerely care about others without having ulterior motives. I even spent two years with a woman who was the breadwinner, while I was a stay-at-home partner (and we both liked it that way). We only drifted apart because she wanted children & I didn’t; we remain friends (and occasionally lovers) to this day.

That said, I'm not surprised that these CI idiots don't understand how human pregnancy works.
