At a Senate hearing on Wednesday, Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren mentioned Trump’s claims about “600%” reductions in drug prices. Kennedy responded, “President Trump has a different way of calculating. If – there’s two ways of calculating percentage. If you have a $600 drug and you reduce it to $10, that’s a 600% reduction.”

Kennedy’s remark drew considerable mockery on social media. But he made a similar comment at a White House event with Trump on Thursday – and deployed additional incorrect numbers while trying to support his case.

Kennedy, apparently alluding to his exchange with Warren, said he had on Wednesday told a Democratic senator who challenged Trump’s claims of a 600% reduction in drug prices: “Well, if the drug was $100, and it raised the price to $600, that would be a 600% rise. Well, if it drops from $600 to $100, that’s a 600% savings.”

“That’s right,” Trump interjected as Kennedy was explaining. But it’s not.

Let’s pretend that percentages were redefined to work like this. He’s claiming the following: $600 ÷ (600%/100) = $100. Or alternately, $600 × (100/600%) = $100. Whichever one you would use depends on exactly how you would typically frame this new idea of what percentages are supposed to be, the math works out the same either way.

Under this new idea, let’s say that the price was instead reduced by 50%. The math then works out to $600 ÷ (50%/100) = $1200. Or $600 × (100/50%) = $1200. Ummmmm… so $1200 is lower that $600? And for that matter, increasing $600 by 50% would result in $300. Reducing *or* increasing something by 100% would both result in no change. Increasing or reducing something by 0% would break math.

The only way this could possibly make sense is if you used a different definition of “percentage” depending on whether you were reducing or increasing a value, which would mean reductions and increases could never be less than 100%, which would also be inconsistent with how math works in general.

My question: is this the worm speaking, or whatever remains of his original brain?

If RFK Jr. was as good at law as he’s in maths and medicine then his clients would have been better of defending themselves.
