I… I think it’s a reference to the founder of Ford’s infamous antisemitism? otherwise I don’t know… also Ford has been trying to go against this for a while now and it didn’t stop the company from being apart of the same effort to fight against the Nazis so the point is mute either way.

In reality, Henry Ford’s antisemitism was actually a liability for the company even before the war. As early as 1929, he ostensibly - if perhaps insincerely - distanced himself from his previous work, stopping the publication of The International Jew and and making a public apology. In 1942, he wrote a letter to the leader of the ADL expressing hope that the end of the war would mark the end of antisemitism and racism in general, and by legal action got the reprinting of The International Jew banned in Germany. Finally, the stroke leading to his death by cerebral haemorrhage in 1947 was reportedly triggered when a newsreel on the Holocaust confronted him with the horrors he had brought about…

At this rate, his next comic is just going to be a single panel saying ‘Jews = bad’.

For whatever it’s worth, that’s definitely a 1930s Ford. The model introduced in 1932, known by several different names, like the “Model B” or if you got the one that came with that new 85 hp engine, the “Ford V-8″. So if nothing else, I can say that this comic is totally anachronistic. Few people even HAD a TV in the ’30s, and color TV wasn’t a thing yet, and wouldn’t be somewhat common for like another 30 years!

I did a little checking, and apparently the Ford V-8 continued production until 1953, but color TV wasn’t commercially available until 1954. So even pretending that this scene is a random aside which happened long after WW2, it’s still anachronistic. But the first black & white commercial was apparently in 1941. So *if* you ignore the part where it’s in color, it is plausible that someone who was well-off enough to have a television during WW2 might have seen a Ford V-8 commercial. But it’s still implausible that this commercial would have been openly antisemitic. It’s also implausible that someone from the 1940s would be using 21st century slang.

The engine itself, the Ford V-8 aka the “flathead” was produced until ‘53, they were maybe still calling the car you got it in the “Ford V-8″ too, but what Tatsuya drew is definitely the 1930s car. If you know the song “Little Deuce Coupe” by the Beach Boys, that’s what they were singing about, a ‘32 Ford hot rod. “just a little deuce couple with a flathead mill, but she’ll walk a Thunderbird like she’s standing still”
