Church historians claimed that Rome fell because it had become wicked and decadent. I think that's one of the lessons of history the author is talking about. But, of course, the fall of Rome was due to many factors, including barbarian invasions, over-reliance on slave labor, political instability, ineffective administration, decline of the military, etc. etc. etc. "Immoral perversions" didn't make the list. It never does.

Consider the polio epidemic in Minneapolis the summer of 1946. Most of the victims were under 15, so children were banned from restaurants, parks, movie theaters, anywhere they could congregate. They ended up under virtual house arrest. The State Fair was cancelled. School opening was pushed back two weeks. My mother described how she wasn't even allowed to take the trash out to the garbage cans (she was 10). She certainly could not visit her friends or have anyone over.
