Most families had anywhere from five to more children. The average number was around six.
The last time American families had an average of 6 children was 1845. The birth rate has been dropping fairly steadily ever since. By 1900, it had dropped to 3.94. During the Great Depression, it fell below 3, and by 1940, it was only 2.06. It reached a high of 3.58 in 1960, after the introduction of the Pill, but has been falling ever since.

As for men being the sole providers, that wasn't the case in the Thirties when lots of women (including my grandmother) had to find work to help pay the bills their husbands couldn't handle on their own. And what about Rosie the Riveter during WWII? That same grandmother put on overalls to plow fields with a team of horses because all the men were away fighting.
