By the time Germany was losing the war, I doubt they had the resources for any kind of research. They were literally fighting for their lives.
The subsequent capture and development of this technology by the USA in the late 1940s created a need to cover this technology up.
What need? Why not capitalize on it openly? That would have scared those dratted Russkies and probably made us the winners in the Cold War.
