Sadly, it seems that deliberately crippling a childs development isn't an uncommon tactic amongst narcisstic/abusive parents.

Another common tactic is making up phantom dangers (I call it fearleading) so the child will be too terrified to leave. I had a friend who had insanely controlling parents who would telling her horrifying tales of the outside world , telling her that almost everyone outside the home is a rapist/paedophile/murderer and that if she left or moved out she would be killed or face a Fate Worse Than Death. They also did the "everyone on the internet is a axe murderer" thing. I suspect they did that so she wouldn't try to seek advice/help from the internet.

I too firmly believe it's just a last-ditch attempt by Conservative Christians to put teh uppity wimminz in their place. Think about it, it becomes MUCH more difficult for a woman to leave a relationship when she has children (and was all but outright impossible in the days before no-fault divorce). This is especially true if she is also economically disadvantaged or in an abusive situation.
Plus employers often discriminate against pregnant women, so she's gonna have a hell of a time finding work outside the home .
