But to promote the falsehood that human rights are an oppression, rather than allowing people to live their lives, and to misconstrue public criticism as such, it's a common trope. That "defiance" argument has also been used to assume guilty, persecute, etc. It also denies actual problems like systemic racism, possibly to increase it.

For instance, assuming that you understand how the first encounter/impression is likely to turn bad because of attitude and history, that you know about statistics and an economic situation causing a high number of non-convicted arrested to find themselves waiting inside without being able to pay bail, how petty crime is higher when you're denied access to a better life, etc. Your cards castle pretty much crumbles.

"False memory" formation exists, so does sleep paralysis where short dreams appear extremely real with a feeling of powerlessness and often fear. Dreams, delirium episodes and hallucinations due to psychosis are typically influenced by conditioned beliefs. Then there is the human formation of folklore and tradition. Add to that the books and tourism market and their ads, and the nonsense presented as documentaries on entertainment TV stations. Then UFO cults, political extremism radicalization including such narratives (like for the Patriot Movement), etc.
