Yeah, I’m no surgeon, but I’m pretty sure that’s how none of it works.

While I admit I have heard of very rare cases of patients with locked-in syndrome being mistakenly declared dead (although I’m not sure how accurate those are); there tend to be a lot of rules and procedures to avoid such a thing happening. And even so, it’s not like every single organ donor (or any of them, really) is still alive as they’re being cut open. At least, not in civilized countries.

Not to mention that you have to legally consent to be an organ donor, do you not?

Uhhhmmm, okaaaaaay. Ignoring for a moment that all of those “alien encounters/abductions” so far have only appeared in science fiction or tall tales, none of your “examples” are in any way universal to the genre at all.

I mean, I have never seen aliens being stopped by invoking the name of Jesus, or outright giving humans technology (quite the opposite even). Plus, aliens all smelling like sulfur seems awefully specific… Also, Mass Effect for example does make some mention of some aliens converting to human religions and vice versa.

I read your comment and I have to say I don’t necessarily disagree with it. Your argument especially that gentics are inherently too chaotic and unpredictable is very true, and is another reason why RL eugenics would be impractical to employ (for now, at least). Plus there is still the whole “nature vs nurture” debate. An identical clone of Hitler would likely not become the same jew-hating murdererous dictator in any different environment, for example.

That being said, I’m afraid I may have not made myself clear enough earlier. I didn’t say we outright should employ eugenics (and I even expressed scepticism on the OP’s claims that it would solve all problems), I was primarily musing aloud on how if eugenics would become an invetable necessity in our future and how they would best be approached. Plus, I do think it could be somewhat useful in eliminating inherited genetic defects and such. But that’s just me.

Also, I meant to say that if the world becomes overpopulated, making less babies in general (but fairly, no “rich can buy rights” and such) would not be such a bad idea (ignoring the whole “elderly people without care” dilemma for now). I didn’t mean to say that certain people need to be sterilized.

And I also agree that eugenics might become necessary in the future (especially at our current rate), it’s just that most people who advocate for it loudly are the ones who least deserve to continue on. I don’t know how you’d actualy use it, but IMO the best way to use the IG to solve a potential population boom is not to kill many people, but rather to implement something like the Genophage from Mass Effect. Reduce the overall fertility rate of humans. At least that way you can reduce the future numbers without actually killing anyone.

Granted, I’m not saying I would be qualified to make such a decision myself, but it just seems like the more humane option than what Thanos tried to do…

Anyway, I’m sure there’s a name for the philosophy that I forgot, but I do think that having babies casually should not be a basic right anymore. Say what you want, but I think that if you have a child while you cannot guarantee that child can have a fair chance at a happy future, then you’re just being selfish and shouldn’t have had a child to begin with. And believe it or not, but my mother actually agrees with me. Doesn’t stop her from loving me though.

I’m sure that what I’m saying is very controversial, but it is something I do stand by.

You could say a computer algorithm should determine those criteria, but then who would write said algoritm? Face it, most people are just too biased to make such a decision properly.
