I bet you’ll sing a different tune if you become “defective” from an accident (amputation, paralysis, brain damage from a concussion, etc.)

Guy I used to know, a partial quad, spent his time suing places that didn't have basic accommodations like curb cuts, door handles, wide doors, etc. He didn't make any money off it. He just wanted legal compliance.
Rode through a new development with him one day and he said "All these young people on the sidewalks ought to thank me, because if they're lucky, they'll live long enough to need all the stuff I'm demanding."

Attitude promoting, or resulting from, a lack of empathy, or sociopath and egoistic tendencies. It only happens to others, could never happen to me, they're lesser beings (defective), don't deserve respect or support, deserve to be mocked or bullied for something out of their control... Then who needs to state something stupid like this, if not to be an asshole? The reason it's ok to criticize and mock assholes. Then Shirogane is right: this goes hand in hand with trying to make all kinds of bigotry fashionable and trying to justify and promote injustice.

Was Zero here raised in a family? Because growing up in mine I saw epilepsy, Down's syndrome, diabetes, arthritis, deafness, and the long-term effects of polio, not to mention one uncle who lost both legs in WW II. Even as a child I knew that bodies can break down in all sorts of ways, and that it can happen to anybody.

Being able-bodied is a gift. All it means is that you're lucky.

Dude will likely say “Oh I’ll just commit suicide then. I’d rather be dead than like YOU!!”. I’ve been stuck in conversations like this and the ableists always say this. It’s like some kind of script (likely from their parents) has been installed in their brains.

Dude likely comes from a family where disability is held as shameful and so no one talks about it if they’ve got one. Either that or some things like diabetes, etc, are framed as somehow different from disabilities. And they will gladly bring this family member up if they “never made a big deal out of it” (translation: never made anyone uncomfortable by mentioning their illness/disability or being disabled in front of others) or “never demanded special treatment” (translation: never demanded their rights to be respected). Lots of ableists will use these people as a shield to defend their ableism.

I mean… these types of people either don’t care about human dignity, think human dignity is a privilege that can be revoked, or don’t see disabled people as human to begin with.

You're right, of course; I even remember my mother commenting how proud she was that the family never hid her cousin's epilepsy as something shameful (back before there was medication to control it). Here's hoping our society continues to be open and honest regarding disabilities.

This proves it’s Harder Than You Think: especially for those after battle injury or birth defects. Or even a road accident. How a momentary defect in thinking can change a life forever. Nice physiology you have there, OP.

I agree! Having to hide my disabilities made me feel like I was defective and shameful as a person. I refuse to ever do it again. People who want us to hide are going to have to just fucking deal. We’re here. We’ve always been here. And we’re not hiding anymore.
