In an address to the Russian public, Putin said that the country of Russia and its culture are being “canceled” by Western forces, which are removing them from history and disparaging their cultural works. In short, he said, Russia is being treated the same way as Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.
“They canceled Joanne Rowling recently, the children's author. Her books are published all over the world,” Putin said. “Just because she didn't satisfy the demands of gender rights.”
Putin compared the criticism Rowling has received for her transphobic politics to a great variety of perceived indignities to the Russian people: the apparent removal of Russian writers and composers from undefined places in the West, Nazi book burnings, and even America dropping the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.
“We remember that footage when they were burning books,” Putin said. “It's impossible to imagine such a thing in our country. We're insured against these things thanks to our culture.”

It's a fine propaganda statement,but only if people don't know the topic. Sure, in a more biased US leaning history book they might mention more of the US feats during WWII. But only the ignorant don't know how helpful the USSR was in taking down the Axis. Granted that's only because Germany broke their treaty though.

As for the other statements, it's not like people "erased" J.K. Rowling, it's that after all the silly extras she kept commenting on, the panned play, and now transphobic comments, people just don't like her as much. She's never been canceled.

And yeah, Russia would never do anything like burn books. That'd be just as silly as them doing something like arresting people for protesting, heavily suppressing the media, or retaliating against political rivals.

Like I said before, no one except you is trying to cancel Russian culture. I have Russian ancestry and speak the language and also there are about 50,000 ex-pats in the Denver area. Believe me, if Russian culture was being canceled we would know - there would be no more Russian parties, no more guys walking around in Adidas jump suits with dress shoes and leather jackets, no more Russian spoken on the streets, no more Russian joke sites. There would be no more Russian programs at the university, no more Russian tea rooms. The culture is doing just fine, it’s just you that’s trying to ruin everything then blame it on something else.

Credit where it’s due, Rowling told Putin to sod off, as the British would put it.

More pertinently, it’s not Russian culture that’s being “canceled”, just Russia itself. There’s no campaign against Russian culture or Russian-Americans, like what happened with German culture and German-Americans after America entered World War I. You can point to examples if you think I’m wrong.

You’re also ignoring the fact that even the ethnic Russian population of Ukraine has largely turned against Russia, as has the Russian diaspora elsewhere. Also, I don’t think the Nazi book burnings were targeted at Russia, and what the hell did nuking Japan have to do with “indignities to the Russian people”?

Just one thing to note: while there is no concerted anti-Russian campaign going on, that hasn’t stopped assholes from coming out of the woodwork. In various European and North American countries, there have been incidents of harassment of Russians, or those perceived to be Russians, including — quite bewilderingly, if understandably due to language similarity — Ukrainians. Establishments like restaurants with ‘Russian’ in their name have definitely felt a hit in customers, even when they expressed opposition to the invasion and/or are owned by Ukrainians. Also, there has been a misguided series of cancellations of, say, theatrical or music performances of pieces known to have been authored by Russians — even long dead ones, like Tchaikovsky. We had that last one happen here in Croatia, by the way… but IIRC it has happened elsewhere too. The stated reason is “to express solidarity with the Ukrainian people”, even though the circumstances of it can be quite absurd.

The right-wing rag Daily Express had on the front page yesterday how JK Rowling condemned Putain, and supported Ukraine.

So you doubly FAIL, Mad Vlad.

When you invade another country and lock up dissidents it isn't you being hit by cancel culture which would be more accurate to call it consequence culture
