Once upon a time, you could just be gay...You could be yourself and be as gay as you wanted and that was that.
Sure, you could be gay. But then you would also be heavily discriminated against, the target of every bigot's violence, forced to hide your homosexuality for fear of losing your job, your home, your freedom. None of this "be as gay as you wanted" nonsense; gay-bashing is a very old crime perpetrated by the establishment, and its victims often did not survive.
Suddenly gay being meant you were apart of some coalition with other non straights.
Organizing is how LGBT people gained their civil rights. And it was transvestites who fought the hardest at Stonewall, so you should thank "troons" for your rights today, little ingrate.
