The fact that an American company thinks they will profit by putting trans-friendly messages on their candy wrappers should tell you that you've already lost this particular battle in the culture wars. No matter what laws get passed against transgender rights, young people don't buy into the bigotry. And the future belongs to them.

I'm not denying that trans folks will be hurt by anti-trans laws, and we should fight to stop the hate, but I believe wingnuts are up in arms over this topic largely because they feel their control slipping away. Attitudes are changing and that always freaks them out.

My college tour group visited Israel before we went to Egypt, 39 years ago. Jet lag was brutal, so a few of us went for a stroll along the boardwalk in Tell Aviv after midnight.

We were stopped by a military patrol, 3 young men in a jeep with a machine gun mounted in back. They were quite friendly; I think they just wanted to chat with college girls. But we saw 2 more such patrols before we returned to our hotel, and I remember thinking, "This is no way to live with machine guns in the streets all night."

I visited Egypt in January 1984, and there was a (temporary) red brick wall propping up the Sphinx's chin because its neck had developed cracks.
