US conservatives thought that because country music really speaks to them on some level, that most country singers were one of them. They were quite shocked to find that not only were most of the singers not on their side, but that they also had to pay royalties in order to do that legally. Some were especially mad to find out that the things which they loved most about Bruce Springsteen were meant to mock people like them.
