Sorry for going off on a tangent, but he did bring up exactly what I had been complaining on my Facebook posts for a while.
You see, I believe it’s all those “good vs evil” stories that got us into this mess. So many of us Thai people grew up on these black vs white, absolute good vs absolute evil stories but never advance to stories with more nuance, more shades of gray and the like. They just think people are either saints or demons, nothing in between. Hell, half the time people don’t realize what D&D alignments are, and that’s quite a simplification of human morality.
Never mind current politics, some people actually argued that Nazis “are not that bad” because the Allies were made of nations that once were Imperialists, and “history was written by the victors”, so if one side of the war were imperialists the other side are “probably the good guys”.
Hell, there are North Korean supporters in my country that, when asked, gives the reason “Westerners are lying, manipulative people, so they of course would run a smear campaign against a nation that don’t follow their will”.
So yeah, this is what growing up exclusively on “good vs evil” stories does. It actually gets so bad that I end up telling hell of a lot of people to watch Gundam Seed, My second least favorite Gundam series, just because it shows that two evil countries can also fight each other.
