Though occasionally I wonder that if different ways of expressing the same numerical value are sometimes representative of different physical realities when you apply them to real objects. For example, 0.999… is most often the result of adding up to 3⁄3 or 9⁄9 or similar fractions, and having a cake cut into 3 or 9 slices (or having slices from multiple cakes) is not precisely the same situation as one whole, uncut cake.

(Though wouldn’t it be amusing if there was some slight fundamental flaw in the way we manipulate values which makes the whole of calculus uneccessary?)

I would point out that while most cities are liberal-dominant, all cities have a significant conservative population, and a majority of conservatives live in cities. Including nearly all the wealthy and powerful individuals which the Right tends to worship. You’d be sacrificing a large portion of your own as well.

Even if whatever method you used pinpoint-destroyed cities and little harm to the more conservative-leaning suburbs, the suburbs won’t function as well if their urban core is eliminated, potentially causing mass starvation in the suburbs anyway. Also, you’d leave behind countless liberals and centrists in the suburbs who suddenly have a reason to unite and deal with the likes of you.

The early lifeforms with specialized organs didn’t have or need lungs. Even early vertebrates didn’t have lungs, and many still don’t. For those who have lungs, they’re essentially a repurposed and modified swim bladder. Swim bladders already have various controls built in which could be tweaked.

Okay, so… this person is making a SWERF-y argument that

1.) All labor is coerced
2.) Coerced sex is rape
3.) Therefore sex work is rape

If this is the only reason why they’re being called a TERF then they’re justified to be annoyed by that as it’s the wrong label, even though there’s a lot of overlap between them and SWERFs. I’m not in the mood to check if there might be other reasons why they might deserve it, though.

This ignores the part where even if one is inherently coerced into being exploited for a large chunk of one’s labor to the “owner class” under capitalism, most people have *some* choice about what jobs *not* to take, and virtually nobody is forced to become a porn star when other options are available (and “porn star” isn’t even a realistic option for most people anyway). Those who do chose the job do it because they want to make a quick buck or because they believe they would actually enjoy the work, and are thus consenting to the sex itself, even if they’re in some sense not fully consenting to employment. This makes it just regular old “theft”, not “theft + rape”. (Acknowledging that specific cases can be a bit more complicated than that, but this is true of many other jobs as well.) Unless they’re also going to go with the idea that all sex is coerced under heterosexuality, in which case, please don’t.

I suspect that this is a young (or new to the concept) Marxist-Feminist who hasn’t gotten past the 101 level of either Marxism or Feminism yet.

People are allowed to raise children according to their values (well, to a point, child protection services exist for a reason). It used to be that people who taught their children certain bigotries as values could count on the government and the wider culture to suppress counterexamples to their teachings to a large extent. This is no longer true in a lot of places. Having the right to do so has never meant the right to be successful in doing so, and being put on the same level as the people they’re bigoted against has got to sting.

AOC is a symbol of a likely future which they are frightened of, for reasons which most other people find laughable.

As the world becomes increasingly global, we can expect to see increasing numbers of people who are not merely mixed-race, but have multiple racial and/or cultural heritages. Race will become an increasingly meaningless concept. That doesn’t mean that everyone will eventually have the same skintone, or that the average appearance will be identical everywhere (I know, everyone here already knows this, this is for the lurkers) just that the already blurry lines will cease to be “lines” and turn the entire field into a smear.

For most other people, this does not matter; maybe some of them are mostly attracted to people who look very similar to themselves, which is a valid preference (just don’t be a racist ass about it) but it’s not that big a deal to them if others aren’t. For those who are obsessed with racial and/or cultural purity, this is a nightmare, if not downright apocalyptic; they want their descendants to be exactly like them (however they perceive “exactly”) and any who fail to meet their standards doesn’t count as a descendant. In the case of the more extreme racists, mixed-race people don’t even count as real humans.

They’re afraid that they will leave no descendants, their race and/or culture will be wiped out, and “real” humans will cease to exist.

Going to space is hard. I have hope that some day it will become a relatively mundane thing, but for now pop-culture sci-fi is usually rather inaccurate for the sake of telling a story which is comprehensible to the more casual fans.

Granted, part of the reason why it’s taken so long is due to NASA’s budget being dramatically slashed after the moon missions ceased, and then slashed again to a tiny shadow of its former self once the space shuttle program ceased, but that’s not the whole story. A lot of things had to wait for the development of large-scale 3D printing. Even now, there are a crap-ton of problems still needed to be solved; getting people out there is only the beginning. Just because they’re almost certainly solvable (and the likely solutions are already known) doesn’t make the actual process of solving them easy.

For some people, because they don’t understand how it works, technology (beyond very simple mechanical systems) is magic; and when technology fails to act like magic, it’s “clearly” fake.

Back when the idea of socialism started to take off, there was a common, rather bizarre take on it by anti-socialists which insisted that the government would just breed people and then have the kids “village-raised” by groups of people whose specific job was raising kids, thus destroying the concept of family as they knew it. Basically they were taking the idea of the “command economy” favored by some groups of communists (not socialists) of the time and applying it to all aspects of life. This is not inherent to either communism or socialism (and if anything, is antithetical to most forms of socialism), and I suspect even most command economy communists wouldn’t go there.

Since then anti-communists and anti-socialists have continued to insist that either or both would “destroy the family”, but they can’t really say how or why; it’s just true because it’s true. They might point fingers at “cultural marxism”, but don’t appear to understand what that means, let alone that the idea is basically dead.

Being registered democrat doesn’t mean much; in states with closed primaries (which, incidentally, Delaware has), there are people who register with the “wrong” party in order to mess with the primaries a little. But let’s also say that he is actually a Biden supporter, and maybe an Antifa for good measure, there as a spy/observer or even an agent provocateur. Still not going to defend him. He’s still part of a mob which launched an attack on democracy itself, and he (and/or his boss in the unlikely chance he’s a government agent or something) still bear some degree of responsibility for what happened. In some senses, “phases” are a thing. Aside from sexually-fluid and genderfluid people for whom going though various phases is fundamental to who they are, there are people who “try on” various identities for awhile until they find one which reasonably fits who they are, and LGBTQIA+ people who go back to identifying as (read: pretending to be) cishet because they want a career and a family and a good relationship with their parents and such… though thankfully that’s becoming a lot less common. And even bi people who pretend to be gay/les for awhile because they have ties to a G or L community which is biphobic. All of those could be considered “phases” in some sense, due to the fact that their outward identity changes for awhile.

But even so, a phase can only be identified as one in retrospect. It’s very rude to assume that whatever someone identifies as right now is merely a temporary quirk.

It was “originally” called GRID because, once it reached Europe and North America, it was seen most often in gay men. But they didn’t know what was causing it at the time, even whether or not a virus was involved. HIV had been known for awhile, but it mostly affected straight people in Africa and was nearly unheard of elsewhere; it took an embarassingly long time to make the connection. You have to remember that medical technology wasn’t anything like today’s back in 1980, and figuring out some “gay disease” wasn’t a high priority.

The key word here is “my”. That changes everything. That’s the kind of phrasing you’d use for someone who you already have some kind of close relationship with but is also presumed to not be readily available. Nobody would do a porn search for “I want to have sex with my boyfriend” or something similar.

I mean, aside from relatives, the only things that I can think of which would likely come up is “best friend” and “boss”. (I mean, someone could search “co-worker” or “priest” or “mail carrier” or whatever, but how likely are those?) But that doesn’t say anything about how common that sort of “forbidden relationship” fantasy is in general.

There’s a tiny seed of truth here - if you’ve got a limited number of choices, no particular preference, and none of them truly stand out, then most people have a bias towards choosing what others have already chosen, unless it clearly hasn’t gone well for the choosers. There’s a degree of safety in that. This bias extends to people, which can result in someone becoming the go-to choice for a particular skill or activity, essentially at random. This can even result in the person with the most sexual experiences gaining even more of it, should they be inclined to casual sex.

This, however, is an exaggeration contaminated with incel nonsense. It’s also not unique to men.

Marvel has always had SJW-ish roots. I mean, the entire point of X-men was discrimination against minorities. Why does this garbage persist?

Misogynists of various stripes keep dragging up that women who commit statuatory rape against teenagers are either praised in general, or by feminists specifically, and this is used as some sort of bludgeon against women or women’s rights.

That’s not how it has ever worked. In some past generations, there were some boys/men who would praise teenage boys for “bagging” an adult woman. The woman herself barely mattered to anyone, unless she entered the public spotlight due to having gotten pregnant from the encounter(s). In that case, she’s always been judged harshly in the court of public opinion. Including by feminists.

Since the 1990s there has been even less tolerance of such things; the boys (or rarely, girls) are treated as victims and not conquerors, the woman is treated as a criminal even if her identity is not known, and have actually been convicted in court sometimes. Female pedos are treated as harshly as male ones.

The only reason I can come up with why this attitude persists is due to the “cougar” phenomenon; basically, if 40-60 year-old men can bang 20-somethings, then why can’t similarly aged women? There are certainly mixed feelings about that, from “you go, girl!” to “even if it’s legal, it’s creepy regardless of what gender does it”, and they might only be paying attention to the former. If that’s the case, then they really need to get it through their heads that most people draw significant distinctions between a 15-year-old and a 25-year-old.
