John T. Molloy was a popular writer at one time. You could probably pick up his some books in a used book store or website. Molloy also wrote an advice column at one time.
His advice was dressing for success or what some people called “power dressing.” To succeed in business, it helps to dress like you belong to the upper middle class. You also had to dress for your company’s culture.
Polyester clothes were considered low class; natural fabrics are upper class. Women were not to wear cardigans to the office, they were to wear jackets. Pastels and bright colors were taboo. Brown was a bad neutral. Women were not supposed to wear pants to the office.
Molloy, in one of columns, wrote teachers would get more respect if they dressed for success. I guess this was to help to raise their incomes.
Do not use a plastic pen, like the popular clear pens to write with. Gold pens are the best.
Live for success book had lifestyle tips. You had to drive the right type of car. My cousin, who worked for a conservative company back in the 1980s, had to trade in her economy car for a more impressive car. She sometimes had to pick clients from the airport.
One lifestyle tip was to shop in the stores your office superiors shopped. Use the same products as they did.
