Well, I don’t see the downsides tbh. I mean, the Asari may look female (by human standards) and thus often use & accept female pronouns out of convenience, sure, but they’re still a monogendered species that doesn’t truly identify as either male or female.

Yet, all of that does NOT stop the Asari from being the most sexually desired race in the known galaxy and even beyond. And amongst RL humans as well.

On a side note, does anyone else think that if Mass Effect was made today the Asari would be referred to exclusively with gender-neutral pronouns instead of often female ones?

That’s a really good point. I was always under the subconscious impression that the OG Disney film took place around Denmark, as that is were Hans Christian Andersen was from, but considering Ariel’s father Triton is indeed a minor Greek god, it would actually make sense to move the setting to the Mediterranean.
