To be all tinfoil-hat about it, the “ironic misandry” and “male tears” trends of the 2010s probably served as a gateway drug to this sort of sentiment. There was a really fierce shipping war in the Voltron: Legendary Defender fandom involving who the pilot of the Black Lion, Takashi Shirogane, would be paired with. Since he was one of the oldest members of the main cast, people who didn’t like him being paired up with other characters called any pairing involving him “pedophilic”, like they did with Sheith (Shiro/Keith).

The funny thing is my experience is the exact opposite. As a teenage boy growing up in a deeply Catholic country, I thought gay dudes were gross. Seeing gay shipping fanart made me think, “Wait, hang on, are those two pretty boys kissing? It looks really nice. Is there more of that?” So I got into yaoi/slashfic, and that led me to think “Hold on, how can I like this stuff and think being LGBT+ is gross? I should support LGBT+ people or else I’d be a hypocrite.” And then I thought, “Why would a God create LGBT+ people and judge them for loving the way they love? Hell, is there a God who judges like that? And why would I follow that God? Or any God, for that matter?”

Long story short, fifteen years after I got into gay anime ships, I decided to identify as bi/pan and realized that I would like to have a long-term, loving relationship with another man.

I feel sad for this person, because they seem like they were forced back into living a lie. I know how that can hurt.

1.) Talk about this horrific, senseless crime in terms of “male-pattern violence”… and affirm the perpetrator’s gender, thus affirming that trans people are the gender they identify as.

2.) Misgender the culprit as a “woman turned murderous by testosterone”… and thus acknowledge that women are capable of heinous behavior much like men and NBs can, shooting their beliefs in women’s moral superiority in the foot.
