Okay, time to clear the air. The “Dark” Ages were not as benighted as claimed. That was just propaganda by Renaissance-and-onwards elitists determined to exalt Hellas and Rome beyond all else. While there really wasn’t much literature, that had more to do with inability to acquire papyrus (cheap and easy to write on) and thus having to make do with parchment and vellum (slow and costly to make, and difficult to write on). That changed when paper technology got to Europe from China by way of the Middle East (not that the Chinese government would have been happy; paper was supposed to remain a trade secret, by their lights). So if you want something to blame, you may want Byzantium’s reclusion from the rest of Europe.

I actually do wonder if light’s speed can vary, even if only by a degree of millimeters per second. Although there is the idea I’ve seen that light speed is actually the universe’s speed of causality; light travels that fast just from being massless. If so, then even that minute variation gets less likely.

They might be, anyway. Do you really think Trump will relinquish power to anyone, no matter what kind of opposing landslide he sees? I do not doubt he’ll try to use something like emergency powers to interdict Biden’s accession.

I know there’s the matter of whether he can impel the rest of the world to see him as legitimate (and the United States is a major economic factor, so embargoes might not be much fun for even the ones inflicting it). But the best-case scenario for either result that I see is the nation fragmenting. And even that might not thwart civil war.
