Earlier this month, Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old non-binary student from Oklahoma, died one day after being assaulted in an Owasso High School bathroom. (The details are still unclear.)
The issue came up on Friday night during a “Legislative Update” featuring several lawmakers and sponsored by the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce. An audience member, Cathy Cott, asked the four Republican members of the legislature why they had “such an obsession with the LGBTQ citizens of Oklahoma and what people do in their personal lives and how they raise their children.”
As reported by the Tahlequah Daily Press, State Sen. Tom Woods offered the worst possible response:
“… Woods said that while his “heart goes out” regarding the teen’s death, he represents a constituency.
“We are a Republican state—supermajority—in the House and Senate. I represent a constituency that doesn’t want that filth in Oklahoma,” Woods said.
…
“We are a religious state and we are going to fight it to keep that filth out of the state of Oklahoma because we are a Christian state—we are a moral state,” Woods said. “We want to lower taxes and let people be able to live and work and go to the faith they choose. We are a Republican state and I’m going to vote my district, and I’m going to vote my values, and we don’t want that in the state of Oklahoma.”

“Filth”
That’s what you see people as. It isn’t about protecting anyone from predators - you’re all but giving literal murderers that jumped a student in a bathroom a round of fucking applause - it’s about having the excuse to slit the throats of the “filth” and pretend you’re not hiding the threat of violence behind a false front.
My god MS-13 or whatever stock gang that happens to be the face of your race scares today must wish they could terrorize a population with such ruthless efficiency and no fear that the law would ever come for them. At least their victims don’t have you waiting in the wings to rebrand them as the ones the public really needs protection from.
When the risks of following a law outweigh the risks and/or penalties for breaking it, it is a bad law. When such a law is targeted at a particular group of people, its purpose is to outlaw those people’s existence while pretending (or deceiving yourself into believing) that you’re not doing any such thing.
we are a Christian state
go to the faith they choose
But only if it’s Christian.
I also want to add that I’m so fucking sick of this hypocrisy. Y’all claim to want to *protect children and now a teenager has died because of your bullshit policies. Now because of y’all, this person never gets to grow up. They will never graduate or go to college or start their career. They will never get to fall in love or start a family of their own. All of their potential, all of their contributions were taken away in a few minutes of fear and hatred - the fear and hatred you deal in.
*yes I know it’s all cynical lies and they don’t actually care about protecting children. It’s just an excuse to hurt LGBTQ people. If they actually cared about protecting children, they’d start with their own members.
…But remember, it’s all “think of the poor, innocent CHILDREN” for these folks! …Unless said children happen to be anything except a cisgendered, heterosexual, male fetus from a white, republican, christian, nuclear family; in which case “KILL ’EM ALL LIKE THE FILTH THEY ARE!!!!!”
Seriously, it’s crap like this that makes me wish there IS a Hell after we die and these… monsters will go to it.
“We are a wig oil user state and we are going to fight that steep kilt to kit out the fate of Hookalma because we are a Chri-stain state—we are of a more salt hat,” Woods said. “We want to wax towers and let people be able to love and leer and go to the faith I choose. We are a Republisher state and they’re going to vote my district and I’m going to value my votes and I don’t want that in the state of Hookalma.”
The “filth” was a 15-year-old teenager who was beaten to death in their school’s bathrooms after extreme anti-queer rhetoric was aired to these pupils.
And I think it’s more #enbyphobia than #transphobia .
Interpreting this as generously as possible (which isn’t that much), he’s not calling the victim themselves “filth”, but rather their LGBT identity, which he probably believes is not innate and they must have been ‘groomed’ into. Still awful, of course.
We are a religious state and we are going to fight it to keep that filth out of the state of Oklahoma because we are a Christian state [...] We want to lower taxes and let people be able to live and work and go to the faith they choose.
A very confused mind that cannot see the obvious contradition there, apparently. Assuming that he means the oppression of non-Christianity only, what about other Christians who don't accept to run their lives according to his own bigotry?
a moral state
Hating some people and advocating for their abuse is not "moral". As a self-professed Christian, you may want to actually read the gospels...

As well you should. Everything I read about this disgusting travesty reminds me that this is a pattern that never fucking changes. Police are only now, with the threat of independent investigation looming, walking back an insistence that the massive head trauma inflicted on Nex was “unrelated” to their death and blurted out some nonsense about waiting until after the autopsy - funny how they could at first be so confident what wasn’t the cause of death before that detail was done - and stressed they wanted a toxicology report in a pretty blatant setup to suggest that Nex resorted to drugs or suicide.
An insistence that reminded me of how Heather Heyer’s murder was played down and ludicrous narratives kept cropping up about heart attacks or the murderer James Fields acting in “self defense” or otherwise being provoked. Like how a story about Nex Benedict “splashing water” on the bathroom bullies “provoked” them to slam the teen’s skull into the floor is being leaned on to justify framing the situation that the victim was actually an active aggressor equally if not more at fault and the school prioritizing punishing Nex over getting medical help.
It never fucking changes.
…so don’t be surprised when you become a superminority , OP. After all:
If the midterm ‘Red Wave’ you were praying for was nary a trickle: and just via Repubicans’ repealment of Roe vs. Wade…!
Confused?
