Er, Crooks shows every evidence of being rightward, not leftward. Finding motive is still difficult, but I’ve heard a couple of hypotheses—getting fame/infamy (q.v. Herostratos), and as kind of a subset, reacting to being rejected from a rifle range by proving was a good marksman—by sniping the hero of some of them. (And instead proving their point…)
