I fully agree with you. The whole “planet of hats” trope (where every single alien race conforms to one ideal) is something I despise and consider inherently extremely racist. Especially since humans are then always portrayed as “hatless” and therefore superior to everyone else. Not to mention it simply cannot work. I mean, how could Klingons ever become a space faring superpower if science, engineering, medical skills, bureaocracy, and other such things are a huge taboo that no Klingon would ever lower themselves to?
Mass Effect does it better, IMO. The “hats” there are just racial stereotypes that everyone frowns upon, and humans are really not that much more special than any other race. They all have their strengths and weaknessess. And that makes them all equally inferior to the Reapers.
Though, to be fair, I think WoW is less guilty of that than TLoR. For example, WoW Orcs, while a proud warrior race, are generally far more diverse and NOT portrayed as “always chaotic evil”, as opposed to TLoR Orcs who are always one dimensional evil footsoldiers of Sauron & Morgoth.
The (bland) Good Side, which tries to appeal to Morality Guardians by being as dumb and uncontroversial as possible, and the Evil Side, where all the *interesting* characters are, generally.
This a big problem I have with the SW sequel trilogy. The New Republic is shown as soooo “good” and “uncontroversial” that they’re outright impotent and stupid beyond belief (thus making me hate them), while the First Order, who are actually far more interesting, are always portrayed as needlessly and cartoonishly evil to the point that it stops making sense; all just because they’re the antagonists to the good guys.
