Yeah hey not to undercut your sermon of self-serving nonsense… okay that’s exactly what I’m doing when I point out that analogy paints the “wise” virgins as incredibly selfish and short sighted not because they wouldn’t share their oil but because at no point before nightfall when they were all together did the “wise” virgins actually suggest to their fellows to check their stores of oil nor did they suggest travelling together to share a lamp and conserve oil which would cost them nothing and they’d have company for the walk. And this little story skirts around the fact that none of this would have been an issue if the grooms hadn’t been late, but they are naturally treated as blameless even though it had consequences for their brides. As blameless as their unmentioned fathers who failed to instill enough sense in the girls to think of such things ahead of time rather than just trusting the Lord would provide and their future husbands would direct them in all things. And considering this is supposed to be allegory for entrance into Heaven you’re basically saying people can be damned by the actions and shortcomings of others but the blame will fall to them regardless and as such to always expect to be left out in the cold with the door slammed in their faces with naught but smug condescension and backhanded advice given too late from their “righteous” peers happy enough to tell them how to live and why they’re failures at living but not willing to spend something as cheap as two words - buy oil - as “charity” when it would actually have been helpful to hear to give them a reasonable opportunity to provide for themselves or even pass a message along for the grooms to wait a little longer (like they kept the brides waiting) until they’re saying it from inside the door they’re slamming shut and it’s too late to actually matter because just being in that situation has them condemned.
So what’s the moral then? To err is human, to capitalize on human error divinely rewarded? Everybody’s an asshole, be ready to screw them first? Men can show up late to their own wedding but it’s their brides who are scorned for it? Blame is arbitrary and decided by those in a comfortable enough position? Women need to think further ahead than a patriarchal religion permits to be able to live righteously within that religion? The broader thought generally discouraged by religion is actually a good idea and trusting in God to provide rather than your own wits despite what the Bible says is the way to live a Godly life? Or is it just screw you, I got mine?
As for your contempt for the safety net you’ll find it very hard to get a job if there’s no way to get in contact with you because you have no phone or permanent address, no bank account for deposits, no work-appropriate clothes, no way to get to a job site even if you go to a temp agency that finds a short term job for you (which you’re contractually unable to apply directly for) and are too malnourished to do a proper day’s labour. Welfare isn’t a replacement for work you nimrod and only someone inherently lazy and opportunistic sees it as such. Funny how it’s mainly the detractors who do. It’s to keep people in a condition to be able to work once the opportunity exists again so that they can contribute not only to their own survival but society as a whole. So that those in need don’t become desperate to the point where they’d have to do something they would otherwise never consider just to survive such as resorting to crime and that makes us all safer, it makes the job of police safer and easier, it keeps property value up, a guarantee of medical attention can keep pandemic diseases in check that could otherwise be spread by those forced into vagrancy who may not realize just how sick they are, it keeps the costs of living down across the board which far outweighs the costs in taxes in both immediate individual financial savings and long term community benefits. All that good stuff you’re too up yourself to ever see and the only alternative you have to offer is “they lack moral fiber, commence humiliation and maybe beatings until improvement shows and until then keep opportunity out of their reach because they don’t deserve it” which has never worked and historically just makes things worse.
What many forget when they’re not blaming immigrants for “stealing” their jobs is that people don’t always lose their jobs because of some personal fault like laziness or incompetence. Markets are in constant flux, commodities or raw materials can be limited, personal health can be impacted by factors out of any human control temporarily or permanently, contracts can change, mergers and buyouts can shake up a business, automation can cut a workforce down, a more desirable employee can come along, demand for a product or service can be inconsistent, certain jobs can have limited seasons, the management can make bad calls while the grunts take the brunt, individual technologies and entire industries like coal mining which much fuss has been made over can become entirely obsolete with the progression of technology and shifts in public demand. Being treated like a lazy worthless idiotic parasite who deserves to be left in the cold and getting a face full of slammed door after hearing a bunch of snide remarks doesn’t get people back to work. Getting them warm, fed, possibly retrained, their medical needs seen to, making job-search resources available, and giving them a way to actually physically travel to a job however tends to do that quite nicely and keeps them work-ready in the meantime.
And this is all discounting the underemployed and working poor, those who already have jobs but living expenses outpace their earnings. If you had any sort of decency it would sicken you to know just how many people can work full time and still not be able to put food on the table. Most soldiers in America, for example, qualify for food stamps and need them badly. That’s how you treat people you supposedly venerate and whose jobs not only risk their own lives but safeguard yours.
The denial of mental health issues and thinly disguised racism you can simply cram into an orifice of your choice. Some fathers aren’t there for their kids because they’re constantly sent to jail for “loitering” at bus stops or “trespassing” at their job on their shift or walking in a way a cop didn’t like (I still can’t believe that is an actual thing you can be arrested for in the US) and spend the rest of their lives paying off fines that have additional fees tacked on everywhere which can see some people paying over a thousand dollars on a speeding ticket for a tenth that amount getting periodically sent back to jail for falling behind on payments that due to their fees just keep inflating the bill. Or they could be dead and an asshole just like you will be tripping all over themselves to say how much they deserved what they got. Or they, like the “wise” virgins in your story, might have just decided they only had enough oil for themselves and told their brides they should have known better than to think they were in it together and fend for themselves. Not so righteous sounding now, is it? But of course, you probably think it’s sinful for the mothers to even try to pick up the slack instead of finding a man to depend on, don’t you?
