When i worked at a suicide hotline, they used to allow a halfway house for cognitively disabled people to call us if they needed to.
One night a guy called me, Timmy. He wasn’t the most disabled in the facility. He held down a job. But he sat next to a guy that was disabled enough that Timmy was able to steal his dessert every night.
That day, he had learned that everyone working the halfway house was a volunteer. People who could be out therre driving cars and reading big books without pictures were doing his laundry, cooking meals, helping people tie shoes.
He was gobsmacked.
These people were AMAZING. He resolved that he’d been a complete LOSER, and was going to give up his dessert forEVER to make up for it.
I figured he’d start to resent that, so i talked him down to once a week. But i did compliment him on making such a major leap, connecting sacrifice to being good.
I figure, if there was a God and he made this Earth as a filtering system, we would not need IQs above 80 or so to pick good over selfish. No moonshots or nuclear bombs. Just a big of smarts and a bit more empathy would do it.

The nominations start with people trying to be funny. 'Because he snores’ or ‘Because i owe her $50.’ By the end of the game, when there’s 3 people, we start hearing who slept with who, or who got an STD from whose wife, or how close they already are to divorce… NASTy stuff. The last five nomiations are never fun.
So on the first round, I always nominate myself and jump over the side. So i won’t get nasty.

I can really see someone wanting to review movies avoiding religious ones. Too easy to blur the lines and instead of the merits of the plot or the richness of the imagery, and the fight starts being about which is the real church and why the protagonist and the director are going to burn in hell. Nasty fighting and it’s not fun anymore. No need for anything beyond their initial desire to have an enjoyable time.
