You’re also overlooking the possibility of modifying a non-essential part of a drug to make a “new” drug, which is a depressingly common way to inflate the price of drugs, but also puts the lie to your claim that pharma companies have no incentive to check the clinical effects of old drugs. If they want a patented cancer treatment that’s actually just something they already sell, then they hop to a non-essential “evergreen” tweaked version. There’s no reason to suppress the treatment entirely.

Another very controversial, but interesting treatment for cancer that will probably never see the light is Chlorine Dioxide.

The important thing to understand is that no serious political scientist or economist is going to say “the lesson of escalation theory is that you should sit back and take it without lube.” Your approach needs to be sophisticated enough, such as a form of retaliation that your opponent cannot replicate, or some sort of subtle nudge that stops your opponent without them thinking of it as being coerced, or any of the other complicated de-escalation tactics (edit: though good luck getting everyone to take a time out). In any case, “you started it” isn’t an effective de-escalation tactic.

Well, no. The replication crisis is real, and John Ioannidis really did write a paper on it. It’s controversial, but not totally bogus. Depending on how you ask, the false discovery rate could be over 50% (which is where Ioannidis put it, natch) or 14% (which is still annoyingly high, since the false positive rate is supposed to be 5%), or anywhere in between.

Just to be clear, I am extremely skeptical of most of what’s written about potential COVID-19 cures and vaccines, for exactly this reason. The existence of the virus? No way; it has been isolated in a lab, and it’s been done multiple times. SARS-2 is not a freaking statistical error.

This is still the first election where the outgoing president did not concede. That’s bad, because future presidential candidates are taking notes and planning out how they could do a better job of contesting the election.

This isn’t even the first interminably-recounted election: that dubious honor goes to Bush vs Gore. Since it’s been pretty solidly proven that endlessly contesting the election has no real cost, it’s probably going to keep happening.
