A state driver's license is also proof of American citizenship; you can't get one otherwise. I thought that because I had been issued one as a teenager the DMV would acknowledge that I was an American, but noooooo, I was born in London so when did I naturalize?
I had to bring my father along for my second visit so he could explain, as a retired Foreign Service officer, what happens when an FSO has a child overseas.
The whole experience was absurd, starting with the reason my license expired in the first place: the Virginia DMV is now saving money by no longer notifying people that their license is about to expire. And they hadn't publicized that change in policy.
