If I were growing up now, I'd almost certainly have been convinced I was "born in the wrong body," would have undergone transition procedures
You are probably *severely* overestimating how easily people can be influenced in that fashion. It would be one thing if people were implied all their childhood that they were trans and weren’t allowed to even be aware of other options or to consider them if they were (you know, like some cis kids still are), but that just doesn’t happen. Now if by some chance you’re actually coming from a place of misaimed empathy, you might want to take a long, hard look at yourself. You might have some unexamined gender issues which need looking at (which does not necessarily mean you’re trans or non-binary and in denial, but it could).
If I'd been offered the opportunity to become part of a special, protected class of people (trans kids)
If you did, you’d quickly find out that for some trans kids, that “protection” is largely theoretical, and for others, even with that protection, being in less danger than they would otherwise be doesn’t always make them as safe as other kids, let alone safer. Also, while it’s common for kids whose lives seriously suck and/or have major traumas to dream of being someone else (or even something else) with a much better life, dreaming of becoming a different gender doesn’t really happen unless you already have gender issues.
The majority of adolescents presenting with rapid-onset gender dysphoria will desist.
1.) “Rapid-Onset Gender Dysphoria” is, the vast majority of the time, “Rapid-Onset Parents Finding Out About It”. 2.) The idea that “most” (80%) of kids eventually “desist” is from an old study which used a very strange and rather useless definition of “desist”. 3.) Even if that were true, that’s not a reason to deny trans-related care for the other 20%.
