Not civilisation, democracy. The system runs fine while voters are informed and vote based on actual reasons, and while politicians are at least trying to follow their constituents’ will.

Unfortunately, citizens are now less informed than ever, due to the amount of bullshit peddled everywhere, in particular social media, and they vote based on their preferred political sports team. Meanwhile, moneyed interests have captured the attention and efforts of politicians, making them run institutions, not to the benefit of citizens, but that of large virtual economic entities and their owners.

Democracies have become idiocracies crossed with ploutocracies. Far-right candidates exploit that by claiming that blowing up every system ensuring that laws are followed will allow them to restore the power of citizens.
