There is no acknowledgement that physical prowess is necessary in certain roles and not in others, but there is a fetishisation of markers of masculinity, which are conflated with physical prowess and competence. Looking the part of a roided up beef steak is what passes for expertise, because actual experts will be the ones pointing out when an order is stupid. Men like Hegseth (or Trump) cannot bear to be challenged, because they do not have the capability to respond to criticism in a coherent manner, except through posturing. Their maculinity is purely performative, because they will cave and kowtow to any aggressive opponent.
