Looking into the article and situation, the mayor has never claimed explicitly that the measure is designed to increase diversity, though that is a separate goal of his.

The photo of the applicant is so the rest of the department, including him, can familiarize themselves with their coworkers, as mayor Adams stated it is disrespectful to not know who you are working with, and that he wants to get to know his departments.

The people asked about it believe that not only is it part of mayor Adams' goal to have the departments match their constituents, that it would increase workload processing/finding the photos as the person putting in the application isn't necessarily the one providing the photo so people will have to hunt through socials, and that they should just hire anyone qualified because they are currently understaffed.

Now, if it is purely a move to increase individual recognition as stated, that's fine, but likely would be better handled differently (provide a picture when hired/get one taken to make it so people don't have to waste time hunting down photos, that sort of thing). If it is to reach racial quotas, I'm less ambivalent about it, especially considering they are understaffed. Just get qualified folks to work the city. Hell, I'm of the opinion to not have much information about the applicant be known in general, race, gender, appearance, etc. to weed out biases anyway, keeping things mostly merit based.

Well, point 6 does depend on what branch of Buddhism you are following, some believe in souls some don't. But... yes. You are a tiny part in a bigger reality in the Universe. That is also true for Christianity. It's true for everyone but a super hardline solipsist.

Point 4 is a terrible misrepresentation, because yes while achieving nirvana is the goal, you are supposed to be a good person. And understanding a person's place in the universe and how they relate to it are like... the essence of Buddhism, the Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path are all about it. Just because you don't understand it and it doesn't line up with your ideals is irrelevant.

Point three again misunderstands that you are supposed to actively try to achieve Enlightenment and Nirvana by following the Eightfold Path. Sure Buddhism might accept causality is a thing, but it's hardly unique to them. Is it any worse than "This happened because it's part of God's plan"?

Point 2 is just wrong.

And point 1 shows not only does the OP not understand Buddhism, but Stoicism as well. Sure, the modern definition of just being stoic in general is about not emotional, but being in control of your emotions =/= having no emotions. And Buddhism certainly doesn't try to turn everyone into a Vulcan.

1. No, Christianity only started after the belief that Jesus was the Christ amd got a large following.

2. Christianity is distinct from Judaism as a main point that Christians believe the messiah has come and is Jesus. Until that massive schism, early Christians still self identified as Jewish.

3. The time of Moses had no messianic figure. The requirements would be laid out far later, and one part would be that they are am anointed one from King David's line. That certainly couldn't happen in the time of Moses, the concept of a messianic anointed figure who would restore the Jewish nation who was a decendent could not exist then.

4. I could grant that a Prince in India could have heard /read/known of the Jewish nation/religion at the time. Ironically, like Jesus himself, his exact historicity is hard to prove, but the dates given would have him be a contemporary of, or been able to know about the restoration of the Temple after Cyrus the Great had a proclamation of religious freedom. The Jewish Diaspora was also hundreds of years before he lived. Christianity though? No.

It's refreshing to see a Confederacy slave apologist being so honest about what a terrible person they are.

Few counterpoints:
1. Slavery was never "needed" for the South. Sure the slave owners wouldn't have been as wealthy if they had to pay employees, but that's hardly "necessary."
2. Sure, the Bible advocates for slavery. And a bunch of other utterly barbaric practices. Using the Bible as a defense fails though, if people not only say the endorsement is still monstrous, but they don't believe in your god.
3. Just because you can (often falsely) find some good things about something terrible doesn't mean the event, things surrounding it, and people responsible for the event aren't all terrible. We we found out today that harvesting and eating racists' brain matter could cure cancer, if we actually went about and did that it'd be abhorrent. Even though it would have at least two beneficial outcomes/effects (less racists/curing cancer).
4. Slavery, it's defense, and the mentality that a group of people are inferior and deserve to be owned as property is terrible and the South should acknowledge it was shit. And try to do better. I'm certainly not saying everyone needs to feel guilty about things they haven't done or didn't affect (like if your family came to the States long after the Civil War) but going "Oh, those people were terrible. Let's not be terrible" is a way to get on track.

It's obvious that the original Constitution was flawed, it allowed for slavery to exist. We fought a war over this. We had to have practically a second social war in th3 form of the Civil Rights Movement over this.

Black people were slaves, and while Juneteenth isn't a particular date of complete emancipation, it's been adopted as the day to celebrate Emancipation from slavery.

Who cares if 9 out of 13 colonies were slavery free? 4 of those were, and by the time of the Civil War, 11 states were ready to secede from the union and kill for the "right" to own people as property. Even with most of the Founders being really bright, they still allowed slavery. People can celebrate being freed from slavery.

1. Maybe if Republicans helped with the rest of the social safety net there wouldn't be as many abortions even if they were legal? Access to contraceptives, better healthcare and education to avoid unplanned pregnancies, better care and support for families so people wouldn't think "I can't have a kid.
