POLL: What to name a new tag for anti-abortion quotes

Mostly because there’s no reason not to; we’ve not had an anti-abortion tag for a long time, so a couple months isn’t going to make much difference. I wanted to let people discuss their choices and change their mind, and I want to include people who only visit once in a while. The main limit was that there might be an anti-abortion quote of the year, so this poll has to close before FOTY nominations if we want to use that tag name for the poll.

Why would you ever treat someone who burns their own genitals off like an attention-whoring child who just needs to toughen up? Anyone who burns their own junk off is absolutely not suffering from insufficient toughness. Either:

1. their reasoning process is so warped that they don't respond to normal incentives (such as the pain impulse) any more,

2. their reasoning is fine, but their perception of reality is warped,

3. or burning their genitals off is actually worth it, based on sound reasoning and an accurate (though subjective) view of the world

“No sympathy, I don't even hope they get better” is not my response to any of these hypotheticals.

p.s. No, I’m not serious. I realize that the true explanation is “they’re not looking for a reasonable solution to the problem, and just want to see people they think of as evil suffering.”

Okay, I realize that I failed to mention a few things. I planned to do it right after submitting, but got pulled away by work.

Anyway:

- ICD codes aren’t technically billing codes. They’re clinical indication codes (they’re used to justify the work that gets billed, typically CPT). That’s not really an important distinction for anyone who isn’t writing HL7 for a living, but it helps give some context.

- I am not at all surprised that there’s an ICD code for guillotine beheadings. The ICD9 for asphyxiation by cave-in is E913.3, dog bites are E906.0, E885.9 is a fall caused by tripping and stumbling. They’re kinda hilariously comprehensive.

That’s not a prediction. Those were already popular conspiracy theories at the time. The infamous vaccine/autism paper was published in 1998 — a fraudulent study that played to already widespread fear. MK Ultra was revealed by a FOIA in 1977, revealing an actual medical conspiracy and therefore lending legitimacy to anybody else’s fears about being illegally experimented upon. 1996 was also in the middle of the Satanic Panic.

Prince didn’t need any privileged information. He just wrote a song about stuff that was already popular at the time.

I hate this stuff, because it’s a typical case of how, in my grandma’s words, “the devil feeds you a pound of truth so that you swallow a teaspoon of lies.”

Yes, there is a problem of the medical industry focusing too much on profit and limiting liability. But nobody needs to make anyone sick to do that; it’s less likely to end in scandal if they wait for people to get deathly ill the normal way and make money off that.

I might even go farther and say that the fallacious assumption that anyone taking unfair advantage of a crisis in a way that doesn’t help to fix it must have caused the crisis forms the root of most of the conspiracy theories posted here. That’s circumstantial evidence. Just like following the bandwagon and all the other informal fallacies, it’s a good rule of thumb if you have nothing else to go off of, but not proof.

And the other grating part of modern conspiracy theories: turning around and doing just what they accuse the establishment claims. The medical establishment provides false hope to people near the end of life? Clearly evil, but it doesn’t stop Craig Johnstone from offering false hope to people with genetic disorders, the galling claim that “everything is curable,” and appealing to God. Why, then, won’t God heal amputees? Or, for something less extreme, why did not wearing glasses and not visiting a hospital at all for two years not cure my nearsightedness (my sister has gone even longer, and hasn’t gotten better either).

Also, this site sells “miracle cures” like chlorine dioxide. Boorish hypocrites, all of them.

The distinction between black-hat SEO and white-hat SEO has always been blurry. You’re just noticing this now because people have switched to using SEO for political gain instead of just commercial gain, so it’s intruding on “your turf” (also, because politics is touchier and more personal than business, and some of tricks Google used to sniff out commercial fraud don’t work on fake news because they don’t have to deal with payment processors if their currency is votes).
