I’d counter by pointing out that tampons are a matter of health and hygiene as part of the bare minimum for humane treatment of prisoners and basic disease prevention along with soap but then I remember these are incels: human shaped collections of physical and psychological filth that probably burn at the touch of clean water and instinctively fear sanitary products. I might have let a bias born of seeing the aftermath of a dog mauling and a personal fear of animals with powerful jaws colour my perception of what would happen when a dog is outright ordered to bite someone. And probably also unthinkingly conflated some media depictions with reality which is unfair and irresponsible of me. Still though, it’s undeniably a physical attack and when something gets bitey I doubt there are too many people that would be able to suppress their panic.

I think that might be the entire curriculum of schools specifically geared towards teaching the spawn of politically entrenched, old money douchebags the finer points of how to play fast and loose with the exact wording of the law, how to make vague but appealing promises while avoiding actually promising to do anything, and how to make very clear rules, indisputable facts, and damning statements caught on tape impenetrably murky to avoid accountability.

“Smart” like pretty much everything else including the lines between right and wrong tends to be a very relative term in that school of thought.

You know the next time I hear some dickhead equate calls for an examination of the race/sex wage/position gaps and criticism of the bell curve which can see multiple students who all got the same number of answers right on a math test receive different grades impacting how their education and by extension their work ethic and overall competence is perceived which often has a direct and dire effect on their academic and professional future - systemic allowances and normalization of unequal compensation for equal measurable accomplishment - with a participation award I’m just going to ask what they call it when you have to give an automatic passing grade to the kid that writes down that earthquakes and disease come from God when he’s mad at gay people requiring no further explanation and all of recorded history is unknowable save for the content of the Bible because you weren’t there on a test so they don’t feel discriminated against for being demonstrably and emphatically wrong or flat out refusing to take part in certain lessons like any biology relating to reproduction and thus hurting their feelings while marking any other student based on the content of their report applying penalties when information is technically accurate but insufficiently explained which might result in a poor grade despite having put considerably more work into their answers.

Well, actually participation award seems like the wrong turn of phrase because it doesn’t need to involve participation and the guaranteed reward might be better than it would be for somebody that actually tried.

Now that I think about it this gets me pondering a few choice words I would have for the people who keep trying to force mandatory prayers in school. “Oh they’re just words, if they don’t have any meaning to you then you shouldn’t have any problem repeating them just to comply with the rules.” Yeah? Well you can give the right goddamned answers on a standardized test if you think it’s all a big empty gesture instead of saying you won’t have other people’s beliefs - namely that observable process like evolution exists which is used in practical medicine such as developing countermeasures against constantly evolving viruses - forced upon you. Or being forced to read the Communist Manifesto aloud, since you don’t believe it and are under no obligation to adhere beyond daily recitation it shouldn’t hurt you, right?

What say you about your next door neighbour purchasing an object that releases deadly radiation in all directions and wheeling it all around the block? Unlike a child it actually is their property and though the radiation spreads as far as the interior of your home and lingers everywhere it has been remaining dangerous for years to come it is not actually physically on your property. Your neighbour insists they are not at all concerned about the radiation and if you are then you can just buy yourself a radiation suit, line your home with lead, or move away to a strictly controlled environment but what he does is his own business and not your place to tell him otherwise.

What then of the “freedom” to infringe upon the health and safety of others for no other reason than “it’s my decision” Rand? Does radiation differ in your mind and to your libertarian views from transmissible viruses that put at risk those who cannot be vaccinated and whose lives depend on herd immunity? Those whose only other option would be to give up a normal life to live in controlled environments? Assuming of course as libertarians are strangely prone to assume that all people have an infinite amount of income that wouldn’t be impacted by completely cutting themselves off from the outside world for years.

What of the even more basic issue of the child having no say in the matter because their rights are determined by you, the parent who sees himself as the owner of another human being? How do you reconcile that with your demand that nobody can impose restrictions or requirements upon you even when your actions have consequences for others because it infringes on your rights which are absolute? Is you “knowing better” an appropriate excuse for determining whether they live or die? Does their living under your roof and being supported by your finances mean they must obey your rules with no right to object without facing ejection or punishment? You live under a much bigger roof and taxes pay for more than you would ever care to admit let alone be grateful for. The infrastructure of cities and even the intangible framework of law has a cost and no matter how self sufficient you think you are you benefit directly from them, and many other things you do not choose to interact directly with.

That’s the thing that really confuses me. The Republican party has absolutely demolished the standing of the United States in the eyes of the world and also in the eyes of many Americans who formerly voted for them. I can wrap my head around politicians in Canada wanting to cozy up to America for trade purposes since they’re our biggest market and closest military ally and taking bribes to let private interests basically run the country instead of you can be appealing to amoral workshy sellouts under the impression they’ll be long gone and comfortably retired where the riff-raff can’t touch them by the time the bell tolls but why specifically the Republicans? The Democrats aren’t really any less of a mouthpiece for corporate interests so why emulate the CRAZY people who even before Trump weren’t that shy about admitting they have zero respect for even their allies? And most of their own countrymen, for that matter. Especially now that they’re pretty much officially on the wrong side of history and so much of their party has been thrown under the bus it genuinely astonishes me that they don’t realize they all consider each other more expendable than a regenerating mana pool in a video game and the chance of any one of them getting ahead is nil even if they weren’t all sinking together.

Even capitulating so much as letting a doctor disregard the Hippocratic Oath and refuse treatment themselves but requiring them to write the referral so someone else can do their oathbound job for them while still collecting their own paycheque is giving too much ground in my eyes. “We’re not going to engage in debate” rather than acknowledging that “debate” is a closed issue legally speaking is not a comforting response to fears that you’re going allow rights to be curtailed indirectly at the ground level. It’s saying flat out you’re not going to allow that curtailment to be challenged legally. It’s also a pretty good indication you know your argument is so weak it wouldn’t hold up in a debate well enough to keep it open let alone convince the other side, which is a pretty safe bet when you’re asking someone to give up a right they already have and services they depend on.

Right so next time there’s a fire, a mass shooting, any sort of public panic, or a jogger with headphones, or police just tell people to clear the area and they actually try to leave to avoid getting caught in the danger zone they deserve what they get. Even if the police started shooting before they started running and it was being shot at that caused them to run.

Couple things: First off you’ve got the sequence of events out of whack. McCall had fled the scene long before police ever got there. You speak as if they had him in their sights and he turned tail. They didn’t have the opportunity to shoot him in the back like you’re saying they should have, he was already in hiding and the first they saw of him was when the dog found him. If he was waiting in ambush as it sounds a shoot on sight order wouldn’t matter because he saw them first. And they were already on the offensive rather than reacting. So that fucks your narrative right over.

Second it’s funny how siccing dogs trained to bite throats out on a guy doesn’t seem like basically the same thing as opening fire. Is it even normal to call out the K-9 unit on a domestic violence call? It’s an immediate and potentially fatal escalation. I’m going to give police the benefit of the doubt and assume they determined he was potentially armed and violent from the start and police were already prepared to use lethal force at the first twitch. Which is again a sledgehammer to your narrative about police going in too soft and does not involve uncertainty about a suspect.

You’re equating this scenario and an active manhunt to just anybody who shows fear of the police whether it’s a call with known suspects and risks or a random stop, which as @Swede pointed out is itself more than likely a deliberate mischaracterization of police confrontations that turn deadly where the police - and not the suspect - escalate a situation beyond all rational sense. You think this is appropriate force, you think this is too SOFT for situations like that? I’d like to know who you think would stand still if a snarling dog jumps up at them and starts biting. Whose instinct is it to stay still and let them chew through an artery instead of fighting for their life? I wonder how you would react to the police in some of the video I’ve seen? Would you accept it as your own stupid fault the moment you took one step backwards in surprise at deliberate hostility including being suddenly tackled without warning and wound up riddled with bullets?

If assholes like you had their way police work would be indistinguishable from a drive by shooting and legal rights would be a forgotten concept. If everyone expected police to simply shoot on sight anyone they don’t like the look of there’s no reason to ever comply with them, innocent or guilty and their only guarantee of safety would be to shoot first themselves and look at every cop as a potential executioner rather than a peacekeeper. Your sentence as a rapist would be 15 years maximum in theory, with actual time served averaging around 5 and a half. With a conviction rate in the single digits. A woman’s sentence as a victim is typically suffering PTSD the rest of her life never feeling safe again and the idea that she should even have an expectation of safety at any time is further beaten to death because she’ll undoubtedly be surrounded by assholes who treat her like damaged goods, a child who should stop crying, a liar, a trollop, or all of the above regardless of how her day in court goes. If she ever gets one. And in practice a convicted rapist’s employment options aren’t quite as limited as a rape victim who pursues her case and has the details of her personal life ripped open for the public to consume as she’s likely to be hounded by people threatening her with rape for daring to accuse a man of rape. Or threatening her family. Or just making trouble for anyone connected to her which affects her employment.

And really your argument of “didn’t think it was wrong at the time” just makes everything so very much worse. This isn’t double parking, taking a hit off a bong in an area that hasn’t legalized recreational use, or a punch up over who bought the last apple pie. While I’m not about to mobilize a hate movement over it I have to admit I find a commercial like that pretty mean spirited.

Although given the organization the reasons I find it inappropriate and the reasons they find it inappropriate probably differ. For me it’s the suggestion that children are a mistake that rob the happiness from the lives of their parents. For them it’s probably the reminder that condoms exist at all and they are morally opposed to them for religious and/or completely hypocritical reasons about “promoting” sex but also preventing reproduction which requires sex that women should not be refusing and so on.

A mild tweak of the line to “family and financial planning” would probably satisfy us both. It’s a little less blatant and doesn’t carry the same sense of resentment of being “held back” by children seen as a burden. It would also subtly reinforce the fact that despite the deliberate framing of it as such for the purposes of slander and fearmongering there’s more to the concept of family planning than abortion and the reason many people wait to have kids is to be able to provide for them including being able to take them on vacations and making happy memories as opposed to just making do.

So this kid is openly racist and other students report him being violent and possibly making threats but the school sees no need for any official disciplinary measures and just calls his parents who are probably the entire reason he thinks the way he does.

Meanwhile in Florida if an 11 year old black boy gets lippy with a substitute teacher and refuses to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, which he was not actually required to do, not only does he get told to get out of the country if he doesn’t like it and suspended for three days despite - and I feel I have to stress this - not breaking any actual school rules the police come and arrest him at his home during the suspension for disrupting the class.

That is not something I thought you could be arrested for without a physical altercation being involved. And frankly it was the teacher that made an issue of it disrupting the class to belittle the student instead of getting on with the day so if disrupting a classroom is an actual criminal offense that can punished beyond the scope of the school administering disciplinary measures they should be getting the same treatment.
