While it is true that a person can't be punished for behavior a law made illegal (for example, if a law was made that wearing hats on Thursday was punishable by a fine, they can't retroactively fine you for all the times you wore a hat on Thursday previously) there was really no time to establish things BEFORE the war. It was the first time that any states tried to actually secede from the Union. Lincoln, like all tyrants, tried to work to keep things peaceful, going so far to tell forts not to fire until fired upon. After the fact, sure. Because a bit of original jurisdiction came up that the Supreme Court could work with they can say that "no, they actually couldn't do that." That's how the Supreme Court works.

But no, they didn't have time. Because people who were willing to kill and die for their "right" to own humans as property decided to attack Fort Sumpter. And start the Civil War. Again, people were so determined to own human beings as property that they tried to leave a country that wanted to ban it. And they started a war that cost over 700,000 people's lives.

People have always said it was illegal to leave the Union. Just because people threatened to but didn't doesn't make the act itself legal. I could threaten to murder someone, but if I never do that doesn't mean if someone else kills the guy the act itself wasn't always a crime.

And, sure. Abraham Lincoln might not have been a perfect leader, he might have made legally questionable decisions during the war. I can deal with that. But I can never take people seriously who really besmirch his name while trying to defend the morally reprehensible Confederacy.

As for rolling around with children (in the linked article), I worked at a school with young kids, that sort of behavior wouldn't be allowed no matter who the adult was.

Have.. have you seen more than the clips? The time is ambiguous in the movies, the first Mad Max is set in a crumbling society. Road Warrior, Fury Road, and Beyond Thunderdome are all well after relevant governments have collapsed.

Beyond that... it's not that they don't CARE about the cars it's that you CAN'T do the proper maintenance. You can't wash a car without a ready supply of water. You can't do an oil change without oil. Hell, the plot of the second movie was about the villains trying to procure fuel.

In the first movie, he was driving his police issued vehicle and then the special vehicle made for him before the police department collapsed. So in that, he never stole a vehicle, when there is no owner, it can't be stolen. And, looking it to be sure, that same vehicle was used in both Road Warrior and Fury Road, both times maintained as best he could keep it. He uses something else in the third movie, but I couldn't be bothered. I think we're all trying to get beyond Thunderdome. A-ha.

Anyway, aside from his vehicles, Mad Max either uses things offered to him or hops on those of people actively trying to harm him, which, you know. No one should object to.

And finally, the cars aren't a "mulligan" and I'm not sure if you are using it incredibly poorly. Since you are comparing it to Rosebud, it more makes me think you don't know what a "MacGuffin" is. Either way.. neither works. The Mad Max movies really don't have much in the way of MacGuffins. Only the two Road movies come close, but neither really work. As the fuel is actually used in the plot of Road Warrior it's not simply a thing to start it, I'd be generous and not count it. In Fury Road the pregnant women are actual characters, so again, I'd not count it. And trying to compare it to a "mulligan" also fails, as no vehicle is just randomly discarded. If a car is obliterated in a chase, yeah, they can't use it, but the groups try to keep an maintain the vehicles they use, the ending often having them riding them into the sunset with what they finish the finale in.

Every point you raise fails. Maybe you should have watched the movies instead of just a few clips?

I can think of two differences between MAGA folk and Al Qaeda to the founding fathers.

The first is the lack of cultish beliefs. MAGA, Q-Anon, etc have effectively deified Trump for some reason, and he's a personification for all the hatred and vitriol the adherents possess. Likewise, Al Qaeda's brand of Islam is pretty vile and violent as the cultishly follow their version of Allah. The founders were deists at best in general, and while they were flawed individuals, they weren't crazed supporters of a cult of personality or religious origins.

The second would be methods and targets. And this ties into why I think the phrase "one man's freedom fighter is another's terrorist" is wrong and inappropriate. Trying to peacefully gain self governance and then have a revolutionary war is markedly different than using intimidation and violence to try to seize power and targeting civilians.

I know cultists tend not to be really bright, but it's a pretty glaring difference.

While he certainly had a massive audience and helped shape national politics for decades, it wasn't for the better. He was part of the reason for the current political landscape. When a cell undergoes mitosis it makes an Identical* pair from splitting. Meiosis is swapping information between two cells that join together, effectively. The process to make identical* copies makes more similar copies, the process that mixes the genetic material makes more dissimilar copies. How is that hard to grasp?

Well, you can dislike a group and hate members of the group without hating all the members. Depends on the sub divisions. I might disagree to a small extent with all Muslims, but hate all willing and eager members of ISIS, for instance.

Who you hate depends on your standards (moral and ethical hate is different than say, musical or game design hate) and how grossly the person or group violates them. Which is why a group with a billion or so people in it can be graded on a scale, but smaller groups can be graded much more harshly.

Well,there are three issues with the idea.
1. Lie detectors aren't the most accurate. You can train to pass them, they can give false results.
2. As much as I'd like an easy way to remove corrupt, do nothing, obstructionist, terrible public officials like say, Mutch McConnell, they do have their 5th amendment rights against self incrimination and there are rules for removal of bad elected officials. They should use the rules more often, but making up a test like this would be a bad idea.
3. Politicizing the test would be an issue. If they are already shielded by the 5th amendment from confessing criminal acts, what other questions would you have, biased policy ones that would likely cause issues with the already not steller lie detectors?

English likely isn't his first language, so not gonna rag on him, but he was fairly often used in memes since then.

I generally agree with this statement, as the Chinese government is responsible for a horrific mess of human rights violations, dangerous nationalism, economic instability, and other issues. The Chinese government is indeed full of assholes.

Eh, I'm fine with James Bond staying as a caucasian male. If you want to have a black, Asian, female, Middle-Eastern, or whatever sort of spy set in the same universe... we have more numbers, 000-009. Rogue One. The Mandalorian, Machete, the MCU all show you can have a universe and draw from it and not be limited to a single character/group of characters. It can only help the universe grow.

Some products do not have a lower end to make them particularly affordable. For instance,yachts are not easily affordable. They are a high end product. Compare this to a supremely beautiful, well trained, specific type of slave. Premium product, premium price.

Also, even in areas and times when slaves were/are available... they aren't cheap. Never have been. They are cheaper in the long run than a skilled worker, but that's cause most of the cost is up front. Only when it is a state or slaver group who is also making the slaves (conquest, imprisonment, etc.) is the initial cost low.
