It seems like a good analogy for a lot of these fringe group leaders. Their power and position is dependent on their remaining a fringe group; actually succeeding in their self-proclaimed goals would mean they lose their status as a big fish in a small pond, so they sabotage themselves by denying the reality of their successes, casting out members that achieve anything by forcing increasingly impossible standards of purity, or trying to keep their members dependent on them for things even beyond the actual "purpose" of the organization.

Yes, you do need to say that. Or, to give a more specific way of phrasing it (because “en mass” is kinda vague), you need to give a convincing argument that “gender ideology” makes rape more common than it otherwise would be. Masks are literally the least bad option for schooling:

* Zoom school doesn’t work. This is the only consistent thing I’ve heard from all the parents I know, regarding the pandemic’s affect on their lives. Between technical issues and kids not paying attention, remote classrooms are not manageable. Maybe an inverted classroom can be done at grade school level with time to experiment, iterate, and prepare, but that’s not what happened.
* (At least where I live) the schools were overcrowded before the pandemic, so social distancing is hardly feasible. The best possible option might be some sort of part-time school where only half the kids go to school at once, but, again, that’s not what happened. It’s hard to steer the oil tanker in a completely new direction.
* Everyone is naturally hesitant to dose kids with experimental drugs, so children were approved for the COVID vaccine later than adults. They’re approved now, but it does take time to roll it out.
* If the history of flu pandemics is anything to go by, a lot of parents will refuse to send their kids to school if they don’t think anything is being done to protect their health.

Masking up has none of these downsides. The worst thing you can say about it is that it isn’t actually all that effective because people don’t wear them correctly.

CDT predicts that it will invite prolonged litigation over whether potential liability is “because of” the provider’s use of encryption (if so, the case is barred) or because of some other reason (if so, no bar).[3] CDT told CyberScoop that the “consistent threat of litigation … will be a strong disincentive against providing [end-to-end encryption] and continuing to have to defend that decision in court.” With potentially wide variation in state CSAM laws, “the worry,” as Techdirt says, “is that we won't know whether or not offering end-to-end encryption would be seen as violating state laws until long and costly cases go through their lengthy process.” The Internet Society’s Joe Hall agreed, telling CyberScoop that the amendment is “a fig leaf of protection for strong encryption” that leaves providers “to fight it out in court, which is far from cementing protection and clarity for encryption, the bedrock of our lives on the internet and in the real world.” I couldn’t have said it better.
It’s not clear how many cases against providers would actually be precluded by Leahy’s amendment. Plaintiffs and state AGs could readily come up with other grounds besides encryption on which to premise liability for an encrypted service (at least as a pretext, even if encryption is really the ultimate reason they’re mad). CDT also points out that the Leahy amendment doesn’t stop the AG-headed commission from recommending anti-encryption best practices (as any commission with Bill Barr at the helm will likely do). That would’ve been a freebie for Leahy to throw in, especially with the commission’s fangs removed anyway.
I also think the Leahy amendment doesn’t go far enough. The carve-out’s section header is about “cybersecurity protections” not giving rise to liability. But the text is only about encryption. What about other kinds of cybersecurity protection? Those should not give rise to liability either; federal policy should incentivize providers to protect their users’ security, not dissuade them from doing so – especially now that COVID-19 has moved so many Americans’ work, school, and other life activities online. What about mechanisms for accessing otherwise-encrypted information that technically “don’t touch the encryption,” such as the ghost user proposal, client-side scanning, or the custom version of iOS that the FBI tried to force Apple to create in the 2016 “Apple vs. FBI” showdown? The way I read the Leahy amendment, I’m not sure it would preclude liability if a provider fails to take measures such as those.
The Leahy amendment is certainly better than nothing, and the language is more thorough than it could be. But it’s not the silver bullet that some are holding it out as in terms of answering critics’ concerns about how EARN IT could potentially discourage encryption and harm cybersecurity.

Same reason anyone tries to convince strangers of anything: because no man is an island. Atheists, and theists for that matter, have to live with the consequences of the choices that other people make sometimes.

As a wise man once put it:

Why make such a big deal about drinking and driving, except that the driver might crash into someone who isn’t drunk, and this is a foreseeable problem that ought to be prevented before the crash actually happens? Sure, you could argue that they haven’t actually done any harm unless they’ve actually crashed, but waiting until then to mete out punishment is really stupid.

Fundie Christians see atheists as dangerously irresponsible, and thus are obligated to do something about it before things get worse. This makes sense, and it sort of makes the conflict inevitable, because it informs your views on so many things that ultimately everyone has to live with, for example, some kind of medical policy informed by something, and obviously there isn’t going to be a unanimous decision on what that is. The alternative to arguing about it is having some emperor decide for us, and that’s not really better.

At the core of every distributed ledger system is a consensus protocol; when more than one node has a contradictory idea of the transaction history, your node needs to pick which one is correct. Bitcoin, for example, uses a system based on Proof of Work, I call it the Nakamoto Consensus Algorithm, where the ledger with the highest PoW difficulty score wins. The claimed advantage of this system is that it is a Sybil Attack-Proof Voting System. As long as there are a large enough number of mutually-distrusted actors involved in the network, the majority of the compute power will also back the majority of the participants. The obvious downside is that it’s slow and does not scale.

RippleNet does not work that way. Instead, it uses a much more classical vote protocol — not the same as Raft or Paxos but the same sort of idea — “over collectively trusted subnetworks” as their current paper puts it. In other words, Ripple requires nodes to have a more-or-less consistent view of the network. According to this paper, it needs about 90% overlap, with a proposal that’s supposed to bring it down to about 60%. How do you establish trust for between 60% and 90% of the network? You have to do it out of band, and according to the history and news I’ve read about Ripple, it’s mostly being done through government contracts for trustworthiness between existing financial institutions.
