And your gas/100 miles analogy fails, too. Imagine that a combustion engine worked by turning gasoline into apple cider vinegar. THen, if we examine the gas tank and measure how much of it was gas, and how much of it was vinegar, we could calculate how long the engine was running
That’s how we calculate the age of a sample. How much of it is the radioactive, source material and how much is the daughter materials that are produced by the decay.
If half of the sample is daughter-stuff, and the source has a half-life of a bazillion years, then the sample is likely a bazillion years old, give or take.
